2018 Offseason And Targets

I think assuming Camargo is going to continue to be a 3+ win guy at 3rd is a dumb idea.

Both Camargo and Neck are projected to be similar hitters in 2019. JD is a bigger upgrade than whatever they could get in the OF to replace Neck. Also ignores that Camargo in a super utility role helps the bench as well.

I think jogun could maintain a 3+ win for the foreseeable future. However I agree moving him to the bench does help. But going negative at catcher and RF from last year negates what Donaldson brings most likely. I am just not a believer in Mac and Neck together. I was fine with one of them but not both. Not without buying a better insurance policy. And we didn’t. So we have the potential to see raffy lopez and dufail getting playing time when one of the old dudes gets hurt.

Assuming that doesn't happen for several weeks, we could just as easily see A-Jax and Riley instead after their clocks have been gamed.

I don't think anyone thinks enough of A Jax to manipulate his clock a whole lot.

Riley I think just needs a little more time and he could see ABs in LF in the minors during that time.

If the Braves kept Camargo they would be going negative at 3rd as well. The numbers don't back up Johan continuing to be that type of player. Braves also are projected to get 3.6 WAR out of their catchers in 2019 after 3.5 last year between Suzuki and Flowers. So I'm not sure how that can be treated as a negative.

I still maintain camargoat would have maintained. But impossible for me to prove. So I will concede. But I don’t think we will get that much from the catching Corp unless Flo carries the weight. Like 4 wins to offset Macs negative war. I hope I am wrong. But I don’t buy that Mac has much left to offer.

I mean you probably are wrong.

In one of his stand-up routines, David Cross talks about the misuse of "literally" to hilarious effect. The joke goes something like "A guy says to his friends, 'I literally crapped my pants." One of his friends replied 'Oh, you crapped your pants.'"

“What’d you do with the pants?”

I think the front office honestly believed last year was caused by health reasons and Duvall would bounce back big in 19. I think they were planning on him returning to his lefty mashing form. It makes sense considering the rest of the offseason. The FO was open to upgrading the OF but all reports were that they were focused on other things. I think their plan was to re-sign Markakis if nothing dropped in their lap and then use a rotation of Inciarte, Markakis, and Duvall. Duvall would play against every lefty with Inciarte and Markakis rotating out.

If Duvall was going to return to form, that wouldn't be a bad idea. The problem is that the FO was fooling itself with Duvall. Believing Duvall was going to return to form was convenient for the FO as it means they didn't make a mistake trading for him. There was a bias at play there.

The money invested in Duvall is annoying and more than we need to be just wasting but the bigger problem is the opportunity cost. The belief that Duvall was going to return to form took the urgency out of upgrading the OF. Now we're looking at starting the season with big hole in the lineup, especially against lefties.

I can't imagine that they are going to go out and make a big acquisition at this point. Just would not fit with the otherwise eerily calm pace of the offseason.

Really, they just need to play Camargo in LF vs LHP.

Camargo really does smash LHP though.

I think there is a non-zero chance he actually is a young guy who just got better.

Passing over Josh Donaldson over that chance, when you can still give Camargo a ton of at bats all over the field would not have made sense.

I agree with the dufail trade. I don’t mind striking out on a chance. I also agree that ender and Muk will play 145ish games baring injury. I also predict we pick up option for Muk next season because of “value”

It wouldn’t surprise me. Honestly, if Pache and Waters keep progressing...Pache should be close to ready for the beginning of 2020 and Waters near the end of 2020 (even Jenista for that matter). Muk would be a cheap place holder. I could see them keeping Muk and trading Ender. You don’t put a 80 grade center fielder in right field. That option is insurance in case one of the guys are not ready.

Inciarte's most valuable defensive season (according to BR) was when he was primarily in RF and LF.
