2022 Trade Deadline

Hector Gomez: SOURCE: The #Padres are in serious talks with the #Nationals for a Juan Soto trade for. Talks have intensified since last night.

Preller bending over backwards to clear payroll so he can afford to drop a huge prospect package for Soto is the most predictable thing to happen since news broke that Soto was available.

I just hope AA can find a way to get involved with a desperate Preller.

I’ll take Darvish. That’ll help em out.

Good note from Baseball America about prospects who need 40-man protection this offseason. Our most interesting ones are Victor Vodnik, Braden Shewmake, Darius Vines. Would think AA would prefer to deal from that group as long as the team trading is a bad one that has 40-man space, unless AA is really high on one or more of those three.

I think Ynoa and Davidson are the most likely to be moved off the current 40 man this deadline. Maybe Brooks Wilson.

Agreed - Ynoa had his chance to show last year wasn't a fluke. He hasn't succeeded.

I remember the good old days when certain posters here claimed Ynoa was the next fixture in the rotation despite being shown that his stuff wasn’t that good.

He seems like a guy the Royals would overvalue.

It feels to me that AA uses high-level prospects for high-level return and not for rental guys to fill a gap. So I assume prospects like Shewmake and Vines are less likely to be dealt unless we are getting back something with longerterm commitment.

I mean the sliders killer. Live Fb.

It’s the command and lack of a third pitch that hung him up.

He could still be recovering from his injury and if we can hang onto him for another season while not sacrificing any real talent I think thats the play.

He certainly is no Jason Castro the all time great!

Would love to see if Alex could hoodoo the Orioles into taking a quantity over quality deal...Davidson, Elder, Vodnik, Vines, Malloy, and Mezquita for Santander and Lopez.

Santander and Lopez are controlled through 2024 which would solve both the LF and "who replaces Jansen" situations. Would make Ozuna and Rosario the DH platoon and the pen even nastier than during last season's postseason run...

Jansen
Minter
Lopez
Matzek
Chavez
Yates
Stephens
Smith

Right, who would have wanted a LHH catcher who posted 2.1 WAR in 2017 to pair with Tyler Flowers that season?

I’ll say this - I’m in Baltimore as we speak/ this town is buzzing about the Os being only a few games off of wildcard - they may not be sellers …..
And as for Vodnik, I would think AA would really not want to trade him if at all possible -

Part of the reason I included him as an "enticement" to make it look like Alex would be giving up more than he wanted - Elder and Davidson still have stretches where they tease you enough to think there might be something in there if you could just unlock it, Vodnik's a wildcard that could conceivably take Lopez' place as a high-leverage guy if he can't develop a third pitch, and Malloy and Mezquita have flashed at different points.

Would still be quantity over quality, but we've seen them make deals like that plenty of times. It would also allow Alex to keep the two depth arms that are close to ready that you might feel comfortable calling up for a couple starts down the stretch if Soroka can't get anything together.

If they're NOT sellers, they're idiots - if you can add multiple controllable pieces before your window actually opens and don't, you're not doing your job. Their window is nowhere close to open yet, and they're not beating anybody even if they qualify for the tournament.

AA's awfully quiet. That means either there's nothing going on to create any rumors or else he's involved in everything but runs such a quiet ship that you rarely hear of anything before it happens. Or it's something in between. Glad I was able to make these deductions for yall to narrow down what's really happening.

Totally agree with everything you’ve said here - but being a seller might not go over too well in this town- people are wearing O’s stuff everywhere all of a sudden and people are really talking them up-
As for VV, I obviously know less than anything, but I think he’s a future ace closer. He reminds me of young Johnny Venters for some reason. Hope I’m right and hope we don’t trade him.

Gomez now reporting that the Gnats are going to make one more offer to Soto. FWIW

My guess is they have a deal lined up to trade him that ownership would approve. They give him one last offer and if he declines, they can say they did everything they could before moving him.

TBH, I’d go ahead and move him and be done with it. By signing him, you will be mediocre or below for the next 5 seasons. By trading him, you could jumpstart a contention window inside of a few years
