Alberto Callaspo Possibly Being Traded

I think the best Jace will ever do is a high .600's OPS... which is only playable if we have a good lineup around him, he's playing amazing defense, and is a good baserunner.

It's fine to have a couple guys with 650-700 OPS in the lineup if they have a .350 OBP. Someone has to be on base for the middle of the order, and no team can realistically put a 800+ OPS guy at every position. The problem is that you can't have a lineup full of guys with the same .275/.350/350 batting line, just like you can't have a lineup full of HR/K hitters.

Typically, fast guys that play good defense like Jace/Peraza/Smith get on base so guys like Freeman/JUp can drive them in. It's the way baseball has always been.

The Braves need to add at least one more impact bat, and probably two, if they want to be serious contenders. A lineup full of pesky singles hitters simply won't score enough runs just like a lineup full of all or nothing hitters didn't score many.

It was a solid......really small/low impact trade. Lets not act like Withrow is Craig Kimbrel until his first appearance.

The move at its most basic acted to improve the talent level of the organization. I will always applaud a move like this because its more indicative of the process. The results are what they are. Sometimes things happen that are impossible to predict and sometimes the players suck. But overall, as long as Hart and the Braves organization continues to identify talented players and give up something of lesser value to acquire them then I'm a happy Brave fan.

To play devils advocate....you can actually spin that the Upton trade was pretty bad since we are flirting with contention and none of the pieces we received have done anything, as of yet. Upton batting third in our current lineup would certainly help matters.

And when he walked for nothing?

Mallex Smith, Jace, and Fried is a pretty solid haul.

Also, who thought the Braves would contend this year realistically?

BS, thethe told me they would.

Wrong as usual, hes said countless times we need a couple power bats.

Link to where he said we need a lineup full of Juan Pierres?

But having hitters who work counts, get on base, with speed is the way baseball is going.

Keep in mind that the Braves had Upton in the lineup last year and still finished below .500...Upton also started hot last season only to falter as the season went on. I do not expect him to keep up his current pace.

Tell that to the Astros

It's not even worth responding to just about anything Hayward posts - so I won't. He clearly didn't/couldn't read anything I've said.

What's annoying me is that everyone keeps saying "we couldn't have signed Upton" (even though we had the money to do so), but we're somehow going to compete next year (thethe) or 2017. We're gonna have to sign another legit hitter or two. But since we had no shot at the ones in our back yard, how the heck we gonna do it on the open market?

I don't think it's that we couldn't have signed him. But I think you just have to look at the economics of baseball and also whether or not any bridges have been burned with the treatment of his brother (treatment that was completely warranted mind you, but probably didn't sit well with the Upton family).

Are the Braves really going to be able to compete with the LA teams, Seattle, Boston, and possibly both NY teams for Justin's services? I would say signing Justin in FA was a long shot. So getting a good haul of prospects for him while you can would be wise if you don't think our odds of winning in 2015 are that great and if you don't think you stand a good chance to resign him.

We don't need to sign anyone significant this offseason. With our gutting of the Padres prospects, trade with Houston, and the Cards we have the pieces to make some impact trades. We match up with any team who needs pitching and MI talent. I'd love to revisit trading for Lucroy and picking up any moderate upgrade for LF. Maybe even make two block busters.

Aside from the fact that it's probable neither the Pirates or Brewers do those deals, sure.

With regard to the Upton trade, it doesn't have to be that it was either clearly the right move or clearly the wrong move. Yes, the team could have kept him and tried to resign him. But that is a risk. So you can go that route, try to put a competitive team on the field this year, and hope to extend him while still bringing in a good many new prospects. But you run the risk of not ultimately being competitive this year and then losing Upton and not having quite as good a system to build on. Or you could do what we did, which is to remove the risk of losing Upton, getting more pieces, and possibly increasing your chances of long-term success.

Neither of those paths is clearly right or wrong. The FO made their choice, and we'll see if it ends up being the right one. If Upton gets a mega-deal somewhere and the prospects we got in that trade continue to progress like they have so far, then it was definitely a good move. If Upton signs for a more reasonable amount and those prospects don't materialize into much, then it wasn't. But either side pretending like it was either clearly genius or obviously stupid is ridiculous.

We'll see what happens. Personally, I like that we may have gotten a future CF and leadoff hitter, solid corner OF, good SP, and super utility guy. They won't all make it, but that's the potential haul. I like what we're building in the farm system. I understand the argument of those who don't think it was necessary, but it happened, so we can probably just drop it and discuss what moves we can make going forward.
