Around Baseball 2024 edition

I saw the video earlier this morning and notice his fastball had some horizontal movement. So I went an looked at his savant page and his fastball had average movement already.. wondering if it is more or less.. but his problem has always been a 3rd pitch that hitters have to actually respect. the curve before he went down was unplayable so hitters could just wait the fastball out and attack it. He would need pin point command to survive the 2 pitch arsenal.

So unless the 'slider' and/or curve are worth anything.. or his fastball truly has more horizontal movement, then I don't hold hope he ever comes back as an effective starter.

Useable third pitch will be the key for him. They have really taken their time getting him back and trying to develop a third pitch for him could be the reason.

For me, I never felt like his pure stuff is what made him successful. It was his command, especially down the stretch and into the post-season in 2021. He just never seemed to get into deep counts very often and hit his locations well.

That seemed to completely vanished in 2022.

if you look at his numbers, he was basically the same pitcher in 21 as he was in 22.. just not near as lucky. I don't particularly remember him down the stretch in 21 or the playoffs.. he did walk 7 guys in 17 innings in the playoffs though..

MLB is considering 2 new rules:

1. SP must go 6 innings...pretty much the dumbest rule I've ever heard anyone suggest. Any safety valve they implement will simply be abused. You think pitchers get injured a lot now? Holy crap this is a terrible idea.

2. Double hook DH. If the pitcher doesn't complete 5 IP the team loses the DH. I actually LOVE this rule. It incentivizes SPs going deeper while simultaneously incentivizing a stronger bench and adding back in the late game strategy lost with the introduction of the DH. Of course, Snit won't be able to manage these strategies at all, but I would love to see them in the game.

not a huge fan of either of those. making a starter go 6 is just dumb and doesn't warrant anymore typing.

as far as the DH.. it is like making a hockey team or soccer team play a man down because their goalie gave up 3 goals. So if my teams starter gets shelled in the 3rd inning and has to get pulled, you basically make it harder for that team to come back.. talk about making games even more boring.

just promote the players, make it easier for us to watch, work with players union to create more parity within the league (floor and cap, breaking up RSN)... stop this savanna banana crap and just promote and grow the damn game the right way.

I like rule 2. But would like to see the pitcher limit increased. Would make it easier to roll with 6 man rotations.

Hmm I didn’t consider the aspect of a team getting down early and then losing the DH for a
Comeback attempt.

I believe the goal of these rules is make pitchers dial back their effort so they can pitch longer, rather than going max effort for 4 innings.

I suspect all rules like this will actually do is force pitchers to attempt max effort longer and increase injuries even more.

(1) MLBPA will never allow the 6-inning from a starter requirement go into effect. If they did, every starting pitcher in the union would start their own union.

(2) Owners would probably oppose this one because it would likely lead to a 27-man active roster with a limit of 13 pitchers. They really have to do something about bench strength throughout baseball. I don't subscribe to a lot of the Billy Beane Moneyball thinking, but one thing he said in an interview while he was still extremely active in the A's roster-building is that there's little difference between the upper-third of AAA guys and the bottom-third of MLB players. He said that prior to the universal DH and benches are shorter now, so the thirds are probably cut down to less than a quarter, but the point remains. It might not matter for guys like Snitker who writes most of the same names down every day, but it would add both more options for the guys in the dugout even if the starter goes six.

Amen and amen.

I like a slightly different version of those rules. I think a 3-4 IP minimum is more reasonable with the same exceptions. I am also intrigued by the idea of a team loses the DH when the SP exits the game. So a SP going longer has other benefits. Imagine losing Ozuna for the game because the SP got bounced early.

Is there any other major sport that does any of these gimmicks.

Maybe football can take a receiver away if the QB throws 5 incomplete passes in a row

Maybe your center has to play for the other team if you miss four 3 pointers in a row.

3 putt in golf. You lose your driver.

Offsides more than twice in hockey you only get one skate.

Next will be "Home Run Derby" if a game gets to the 15th inning.

Football pretty much just took away what makes kickoffs so exciting.

AA really screwed up not picking up Kirby Yates option. He blew his first save of the season today. Had an ERA of 1.20. That might be a 3-4 game difference for us.

Doubtful. Braves already have an excellent bullpen. This season comes down to two things. Injuries and underperforming hitters.
