Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Olson and FF have both been good. Wish things worked out with Freeman so he could have retired a Brave, but everything happens for a reason so they say.

Does fWAR consider xwoba? There's a big difference in the 2 here...

FF .411
Olson .364

WOBA
FF .351
Olson .362

This suggests FF should be much better than actual results

Honestly, just signing a couple lottery ticket vets would have been better than sitting on your hands.

Fortunately there's still plenty of time to add someone like that if Morton continues to struggle - I don't imagine it's going to be "impossible" to find a veteran starter like that in the next month if Alex isn't comfortable that the gaggle of potential back-end guys they already have will provide better results as teams start falling out of the race. Guys that won't cost an arm and a leg like Brad Keller/Michael Lorenzen/Michael Pineda/Martin Perez/Jose Quintana ought to be available for lottery tickets in the not-so-distant future.

Baserunning my dude

37.5% difference in player value bc of base running? If that's the case, the formula is broken

ETA... I agree with thewupk that both's value is/should be tied directly to their bat. FF hasn't outperformed Olson there in actual results, and if fWAR doesn't consider xwoba, it seems wrong that FF is valued so much more

Is the offensive value cumulative? Trying to figure out the difference in fWAR when it doesn't seem there should be that much of a difference

Scroll to the absolute bottom of a players profile page on Fangraphs and it breaks it down for you how many runs above average they are

Olson
Batting: 9
Base Running: -2.6
Fielding: 1.7
Positional: -4.2

Freeman
Batting: 8.2
Base Running: 3.1
Fielding: 2.7
Positional: -4.2

Positional will always be negative for 1B and it's based on playing time as well

Adding all that up and Freeman is 6 runs better than Olson so far with these metrics which is the difference in their WAR total

Which if you've watched most of the Braves games it shouldn't be surprising. Olson has been thrown out a lot on the bases and had issues with the glove for a few games. Now I blame Washington for some of Olson's base running issues at getting thrown out. Hopefully he stops waving him home on close plays.

Being thrown out is a somewhat random event. If the outfielder throws the ball 3 feet up the baseline, a really bad play becomes a really good play.

Freddie has always been a really good baserunner, (especially as a first baseman). An underrated part of his game that’s never appreciated by anyone but Chip Caray.

I wonder if Olson would be willing to do some speed training during the offseason. I find it hard to believe that oddball robot run he does can't be improved upon.

Part of me is hoping the winning streak ends and for more mediocre play from the Braves….. just so thethe will miraculously disappear. Can’t blow rainbows out his ass when they are 5 games under .500. But then again, if anyone could it’s him.

You know you’re slow when TDA makes fun of you. It’s like Carrot Top calling you ugly or Cy’s mom calling you a whore.

Grienke would have done what exactly to the fact we had an anemic offense?

I've been screaming to start Wright since the middle of the 2020 season.

Lol, dude just stop already. Literally no one thought Wright would turn into one of the best pitchers in baseball through 1/3 of the 2022 season.

Greinke would have given us quality starts and not taxed the BP as much, that's for sure.

But Greinke wasn't the only starter available.
