Braves acquire No. 35 pick in MLB Draft for Drew Waters and more

I'm not sure how people can count their chickens on this move. WE don't know who they'll pick. Maybe it will be another soft tossing college lefty. They have passed up on lots of high upside guys that have a lot of value now.

MLB draft is tough. Yes, you can still get cost controlled talent. Yes the Braves have a lot of guys that are home grown on the winning, MLB team. But it is also true that the MLB draft is very hard to predict and most guys take a long time to contribute. Under AA the early picks have mostly been trash, it's been the later round guys.

"WE" don't have to know who they'll pick - the $2.2 million and extra pick are MUCH more valuable than Waters and a couple of throw-ins who might not ever even turn into legitimate AAA players.

The lower levels of the system are in desperate need of being re-stocked.

This trade certainly makes the draft more interesting. Hopefully the Braves and AA can capitalize on the extra slot money and maybe get a high level prospect who fell because of signability issues. Go Braves!

Hoffman looks like the real loss here, but the Braves must think his stuff isn't good enough to translate upwards.

Not if they pick the wrong guy or guys. There is no guarantee the player or players are better than what we sent out.

If you've decided that Waters was not going to be a MLB contributor or Hoffman, than at worst you are right where you left off. I am not there with either of them.

I'll take a swing that the two-three guys we got because of the additional cap infusion/pick is more valuable than what we gave up. Its more than likely it ends up being a big nothingburger.

this move and the Cano move was really just AA giving us fans something to do so we don't stress over the Met's series starting tonight. Genius.

Waters isn't the only bit of trade capital Anthopoulos has to utilize. He clearly found the best match for Waters' particular value, and I'm not surprised he's loading up for this particular draft, given there seem to be a number of players falling in the team's range that the FO seems to like (upside college arms coming off injuries).

I definitely think they're going to give Rosario a couple more weeks before they try to upgrade LF, and I think that's why he had such a quick rehab. Ditto Matzek. Evaluate those players' statuses so you can prioritize what upgrades are most needed.

I'm less worried about 2B because I think Arcia's been surprisingly fine, and Albies will hopefully be back sooner rather than later. Someone with a lot of defensively flexibility, who can play 2B (like Merrifield) would be nice, but I'm also not sure that profile is worth pushing more chips in (Shuster, for instance).

Worth noting this trade opens up a spot on the 40-man, since Gosselin was indeed DFA'd to make room for Canó.

It doesn’t matter who they pick, or how Waters turns out. This was a good trade. If they pick the wrong guys, then they had a bad draft. If Waters turns into something, then their development staff failed this time. None of those future developments have any bearing on this being a smart trade.

Austin Riley was the comp pick no 41 we got from SD in 15 for Kimbrel. I'd say that paid off.

Wonder if any other teams are looking to trade Comp A or B picks.

Dont hate the move, AA knows we need to restock the system. I like the move. Waters never had a long-term home in Atlanta, unfortunately, smart to sell him while he had some value.

I'm confident KC will not be able to turn Waters into anything. They are one of the last dinosaur organizations that can't do much of anything competently, and are the exact team that would overvalue Waters. They are also the organization that will give him 1000 MLB PAs where he is allowed to produce at a sub-replacement level.

This is as bad as Touki going to the Angels. I feel bad for guys who end up with these awful orgs that can't maximize their career...or even help it.

Another reason to think the Braves are still in the mix for Benintendi and Syndergaard. DMGM and Minasian are just the types to roll the dice on likely AAAA guys like Davidson/Elder/Shewmake/Shuster considering the fact that other teams aren't likely going to give up legitimate prospects for a couple months of Benintendi or the new lower-octane Thor.
