Braves Spring Training news and roster competition

So no one giving Brignac a shot at making the team?

I've always like Brignac as well, but like others have said, the fact that he's a LHH probably puts him out of the picture.

I figured both Bourn and Swisher would be on the block. Curious to see if there are any takers. Bourn could be a very good 4th OF for someone with the Braves paying almost all of his salary.

A couple roster notes on Francoeur and Bonifacio, who are both Article XX-B free agents according to the CBA. The Braves would be wise to resolve Francoeur's roster situation before noon Monday so they don't need to pay him a $100k roster bonus. Bonifacio has a full no trade clause through June 15th, so trading him if he's the odd man out is not a realistic option.

Per Article XX-B of the CBA, any player on an MLB Reserve List who has accrued at least six years of MLB Service Time and who is not signed for the following season becomes a free-agent at 9 AM (Eastern) on the first day after the final game of the World Series.

An Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signs a Major League contract after 11:59 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series receives automatic "no trade" rights that extend through June 15th of the following season, even if the player re-signs with his former club. An Article XX-B MLB Free-Agent who receives "no trade" rights this way can waive the right, but if he does, his club can trade the player only for player contracts and/or cash with a maximum aggregate value of $50,000. Note that a player who signs a Major League contract after becoming a free-agent by any other means (Outright Release, Non-Tendered, or Article XX-D or MLB Rule 55 minor league free-agent) does NOT receive automatic "no trade" rights through June 15th.

If an Article XX-B MLB free-agent signs a minor league contract at least ten days prior to MLB Opening Day, and then is either not released by 12 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day prior to MLB Opening Day or added to an MLB Active List (25-man roster) or MLB Disabled List by 3 PM (Eastern) on MLB Opening Day, the player automatically receives a $100,000 retention bonus, and the player can unilaterally opt-out of the minor league contract on June 1st if he has not been added to an MLB Active List (25-man roster) or an MLB Disabled List by that date.

Sounds like there's at least a chance that JJ will start on the DL. Either today or tomorrow is the deadline for a back-dated DL stint, so we should be able to tell if he doesn't end up playing in a Grapefruit League game the next couple days.

@DOBrienAJC
#Braves are starting John Gant instead of Ryan Weber today vs. #Tigers. Gant continues making strong push for OD roster.

Gant is still in the running to make the club. Not sure how I feel about this. I like him as a prospect, but not ready to make him a pen guy personally. I think he should start in AAA IMO..

I think AAA would be wise as well. We are in such a good position with this rebuild. It's ahead of schedule and we don't have to push ANYONE. So, we should let them play things out, but don't push them.

That being said, I really like what Gant brings to the table.

Hello Neal Cotts!!! Stros cut him loose this morning.

There's our second lefty in the pen.

Cotts would seem to be a no-brainer for us. Question is, will he get an MLB offer from a better team. Another interesting option is Cory Luebbke. LHP who was amazing a few years back but has struggled with injuries. Reports are very positive on him this Spring and he has an opt out with the Pirates.

I would be all over Leubke... he was really good when healthy

I thought Leubke has had 2 tommy johns... not really much success at all in recovering from that.

why do we need a often injured Lefty for our Pen. We have pieces in the Minors that will make our pen very good.. we need something to get us through this year... I personally think we have enough projects and would say no thanks to someone who can't stay healthy...

This is not surprising on Manny given his Spring performance and his FB being clocked 87-88 MPH. At best, he needs more time to build arm strength.

so I guess this kind of answers the question of if Manny has an option left.. I guess they could just DL him too.

I consider Leubke more of a starting pitcher project. Low risk, medium reward.

true, but I am not sure the Braves need to be taking on more projects in regards to any pitcher. soon the starting rotation is going to be crowded with future pieces. Chacin and Norris are our low risk projects this year... Hopefully this is the last year we have to do it..
