Braves trade LaStella

Phil Gosselin will not start the year as the starting 2nd baseman. I think will still acquire one, because might not be ready until 2016.

They aren't going to go and give up what little prospects they have for one year of someone. If anything they re-sign Bonifacio and let him and Phil platoon.

This is how bad the farm system is right now. After trading for Arodys, who hasn't pitched much in the past three years, he immediately becomes the 4th best prospect in the Braves system according to MLB Pipeline.

Vizcaino isn't a bad prospect, so not sure I get your point. No one would argue that our system is great, but it could certainly be worse and we have a lot of young players on the ML squad.

Thats a naive question. Prospects are a mix of hits, busts and everything in between. No guarantees.

Sorry, it was suppose to be a tongue in cheek joke as every player that JS ever acquired during his tenure whether it be Jesse Garcia or Greg Maddux happened to called a "championship caliber player."

I don't understand this trade from either the Cubs or Braves side of things.

The Cubs are flush with IF talent, and TLS isn't even in the same ballpark talent-wise as guys like Castro, Bryant, Baez and Addison. TLS will never start for the Cubs, and he will never be a utility guy since his only position is 2B.

The Braves traded away their only real option to begin the 2015 season at 2B. Peraza is most likely not ready, and Goss is certainly not an everyday player for a club with playoff aspirations.

Viz is a potential younger cheaper replacement for Walden or Carpenter, who can now be traded away. The international slot money will be used to sign a 17 year old prospect(s).

I don't see how this can be viewed as anything other than the first in a series of moves to punt 2015 and look forward to 2016 and beyond.

If you look at how Tommy was used, or not used last season, you can see that Fredi and company did not have much confidence in him. I think they saw him as a decent OBP guy with little to no power, no speed, with below average defense. Consequently he wasn't going to be in our plans going forward. They seem to have a higher regard for Gosselin. Besides, there is no question that Peraza is our starting 2nd baseman for many years, it is just a matter of whether that is to start the season, or more probable sometime during the year. Jose will either start the year at 2nd, or Phil will hold it down until he is ready.

Therefore, if Tommy isn't going to contribute to the Braves, why not trade him for a potential back end bullpen power arm, plus gain a fairly large sum to help in the international market to start revamping a weak farm system. Further, by having Arodys, we are now more positioned to trade Walden and/or Carpenter to further upgrade the farm. As much as I like LaStella and wish him the best, the more I think about it, the more the trade makes sense for the Braves.

The forgotten name in this discussion is Tyler Pastornicky. Has Gosselin really moved ahead of him given how much Gosselin's success in AAA last year was BABIP driven? I wouldn't be surprised if Pastornicky was the place holder (and did a pretty good job) until Peraza is ready.

Again, TLS would be a useful player on a team that didn't have so many holes offensively. If we had above average production from 1 of CF or 3B, and average production from the other, going into a year with TLS and a Goesslin/Pastornicky platoon situation would be fine, but the way the roster is currently constructed that isn't the case and TLS's shortcoming are hard to make up and hide in this lineup.

Pastornicky and Peraza both suck. TLS is better than both of them.

Surprised they just gave him away, but TLS has always been overrated on this board.

Interesting they got Viz back, but probably assumes Peraza opens as every-day 2B.

Is anyone else slightly worried about Peraza's lack of being able to take a walk? I guess with his speed more contact is indeed ideal but if teams choose not to throw him strikes is he going to layoff? Some more info about his approach at the plate would be appreciated.

It's something to look at IMO. I don't have a ton of info, just my opinions. But, he's really young and a good contact hitter. He likes to put the ball in play and leg out hits. But the biggest thing to me is...he's really young.

Not being able to take a walk is the only reason he is still on the team.

BP said pretty much exactly what I was thinking...why would the Cubs make this trade? Just to convert international pool money into something?

"Whatever the Cubs' motivation for adding La Stella—is he a stopgap at second base in case of a Starlin Castro or Javier Baez trade, a potential utility man, just minor-league depth?—it's a surprising addition. La Stella, a fairly inflexible player, doesn't feel like a fit on a roster with so many young infield options. He lacks the athleticism or arm to play some of the more demanding positions, leaving him as a second-baseman-slash-left-fielder type. It's not like the bat can atone for his physical shortcomings, either. He's a singles-and-walks hitter who struggled mightily down the stretch. None of this is to say La Stella is useless—he could be a second-division second baseman if all goes well—but just that it would be an upset if he's in a Cubs uniform for long."
