Braves trade Shreve and Carpenter for Manny Banuelos

I'll admit I know nothing about this guy. But it sounds like we think he has a shot of being of 5th starter THIS year. If not we think he's close. He's a former top guy who the scouts obviously feel have a shot of getting back there.

If we get a decent, cheap, controllable starter for any two RP not named Kimbrell or Rivera, then GREAT. Shreve had some good stuff but we can replace that in a minute.

If the SP busts or is bad, then we lose. But it seems like a reasonable gamble.

I heard Guidry comps tossed around about Banuelos prior to 2013.

Did the New Year's Monster eat everyone from the old board???

The sky was falling when we took on injury risks in Jenkins and Fried, but everyone loves Banuelos??? Hilarious!!!

On a serious note, this deal now drops Sims to #4 on our system's highest-ceiling list. Yes naysayers, we all KNOW that it may not ultimately work out, but if it does Hart & Company have QUICKLY compiled a stable full of arms that most franchises will salivate over - and they're not done yet. They can now target offense in any potential Kimbrel/Gattis/Minor deals, but insist on getting that extra developmental power arm included as a throw-in in any of them.

In fairness, there is a significant quality difference between Justin, Heyward, Walden, and Northcraft vs Shreve and Carpenter. If we had traded Walden and Northcraft for Fried people would've liked that one, too.

Also I hope this move further validates how much value Craig Kimbrel has.

If David Carpenter can bring back a nice piece with a lot of upside, then Kimmy should bring back a splendid haul.

He doesn't need to be traded now, but come July, I hope he's on the market if we are out of it by then.

I agree 100%. I think Kimbrel is going to net a very nice return for a team desperate in a pennant race.

All players struggle as they age past 30. It's not just strike out guys.

However, I will say this. The Markakis signing is the most overblown bad move (I don't like it) I have ever seen. If he's our worst contract on the book By 2017 then I say we are in pretty good shape.

Markakis is a role player you sign for a team that is trying to compete for a championship. It isn't that the actual contract is that bad, although the length is risky with a guy over 30 with an apparent neck issue. The whole point is you can get a "veteran leader" for a lot cheaper OR let a young guy play RF for a year.

If Markakis is a guy that can take us from really bad to somewhat competitive, wouldn't it make sense to trade him at the deadline for prospects?

If our farm is just so devastated, that we had to do a half-assed tear down, and Markakis is worth some wins, shouldn't we win fewer games and get a better draft pick?

I hope not. That would be a negative for this trade. Avilan needs to go.

Well, sounds like that concern was correct:

@mlbbowman: The Braves have had recent discussions with clubs about Luis Avilan. But now that Shreve is gone, Avilan might stick around.”

Trading Kimbrel is a terrible idea. If the magical 2017 is really going to happen, it'll require Kimbrel. Hilarious that people in favor of signing Markakis to keep attendance up supports trading Kimbrel.

Kimbrel should be a legacy Brave. Already has shown he will take slightly less than market. I hope the Braves don't trade him but if they do I expect a nice return.

I don't care for Banuelos that much, much prefer Fried's upside. I like the trade because it involved 2 relievers, not Justin Upton or Jason Heyward.

I don't think they will trade CK. Maybe if he requests it. I think they are worried about signing someone to a long term deal and then trading him the next year...worried how it will impact future contracts.

I see what you're saying but guys like Justin would be key to a magical 2017 as well. Wonder what offense we're going to get for that magic carpet ride season.

I still don't see how we are going to win as many games as we won last year. If you think that, then you must think we are a 90 win team with Heyward and Justin.. right?

We were a 96 win team with them two years ago.

Difference is the system was a whole lot more barren then.

I don't agree that rebuilding and trying to compete are completely dichotomus.

Markakis is an asset. Either he helps the Braves win and contributes that way, performs well and becomes a trade asset, or he sucks and is a liability.

I am a part of the majority that thinks that contract was a bit rich and long for my liking, but i don't agree with those that think that contract is a failure if the Braves don't win.

I can only speak for myself, but I like the Banuelos acquisition because the Braves didn't trade anything they can't immediately replace. Not the case with Jenkins, Fried, etc.

This is thrift, because Hart has been shopping at Target all offseason.
