I’m actually somewhat encouraged, and I was a vocal opponent of dealing for Duvall before his poor season. There are some things in his numbers this year to provide reason for optimism.
Although his triple slash is awful, it seems driven by poor luck more than anything. His batted ball profile is in line with his career numbers, yet his BABIP is 30 points lower. In fact, he’s making more hard contact than in previous seasons, and not hitting it to different places than before. If his BABIP just goes up to his career average than he is a rebound candidate.
He’s actually walking at a higher rate than any other season in his career. Combine that with the probable regression to the mean with his batted ball luck, and he could be a solid bat for us.
We gave up essentially nothing and his power off the bench should help out. He’s certainly an upgrade over Tucker when you account for the last few years, and if he rebounds, could be quite useful, particularly against LHP.
