Playing the Waiting Game
Would either of these be an upgrade over Garcia/Ruiz?

#1- Trevor Plouffe

#2- Chase Headley: Not sure what he would cost in terms of prospects but I wouldn't think much. He is an interesting option in my opinion.

Liked Headley three years ago. He'll cost $13 million for the next two years.
 
Plouffe is interesting to me if the deal is 2 years or less. 2 years and a team option could be good.

Braves prob think Adonis is similar.
 
Don't see either as an upgrade. Liked Plouffe a couple years ago but he just was never able to take that next step.
 
Plouffe is better than Garcia. Steadier with the glove. More consistent power. A little bit better walk rate. It would depend on cost. At this stage of his career, I could see Plouffe going somewhere and being a multi-position guy (he's played 1B, 2B, and some OF after moving off of SS early in his major league career). Hits LHP pretty well so he'd be an ideal platoon/PH guy.

Depending on cost, I really like Headley.

I say we offer something like this:

Yankees get:

Williams Perez- RHP
Chris Ellis- RHP
Jason Hursh- RHP

Braves get:

Chase Headley- 3B
Luis Torrens- Catcher

Why this works for NYY:

1.) Clears even more payroll to go after top-end bats this offseason.
2.) Gives them a back-end starter in Perez
3.) Ellis gives them another potential rotation piece (which is something they lack in a deep system that is primarily bats)
4.) Hursh is nothing more than a bullpen piece but could/should slide right into their pen
5.) *While they have guys like Torreyes (Ronaldo) and Miguel Andujar (their 3B of the future) that can slide in right away or later in the season in Andujar's case, they could potentially go after Justin Turner. They didn't protect Torrens in the Rule V draft with Sanchez and Romine handling the future catcher duties.

Why it works for ATL:

1.) Headley gives us two years of control to allow our future 3B (Riley/Ruiz/Demeritte) time to develop while playing above average defense and close to average offense. I think a change of scenery will improve his offensive numbers and get closer to where he was with SDP.
2.) Torrens is a very intriguing catching prospect that is certainly blocked in New York and was left unprotected in the Rule V draft and while I highly doubt he's a candidate to be claimed (only reached A ball) during the draft, he could be a prime trade candidate.
3.) This move would open at least one -likely two if they don't believe Torrens will be claimed- 40 man spots.

This would give us a 2017 lineup that looks like (assuming no other moves, but highly likely we get a LH catcher and most likely Castro):

1. Ender Inciarte- CF (Left)
2. Dansby Swanson- SS (Right)
3. Freddie Freeman- 1B (Left)
4. Matt Kemp- LF (Right)
5. Nick Markakis- RF (Left)
6. Chase Headley- 3B (Switch)
7. Tyler Flowers/Jason Castro- C (Right/Left)
8. Jace Peterson- 2B (Left)
9. Pitcher

I'm not trying to say this is a huge upgrade, but I do believe it would be an upgrade over Garcia/Ruiz and would certainly be an upgrade defensively. This is just me throwing a random scenario and nothing more. I would be completely fine with Adonis Garcia and Rio Ruiz manning 3B next year as well.
 
$8+ million for Plouffe in his final year of arbitration or $13 million for Headley?

No thanks - money spent for the sake of change. Much rather have a Ruiz/Garcia platoon that will be more productive and use that money elsewhere. JMO, but that's a lot of money for something you even say isn't a "huge upgrade".

I can perfectly understand this as well and even agree. Again, it was just something to throw around. Although IF you believe Headley can produce numbers like he did in San Diego then it would be a noticeable upgrade.

Yeah, I think we're at the point where moves need to be clear upgrades. You're right, though, either is a defensive upgrade.
 
Wouldn't mind Headley if the Yanks kick in 10 million. But I'd rather throw 2/18 at Valbuena.
 
Why is everyone so quick to make marginal improvements to 3B? Garcia is cheap and improved both offensively/defensively as the year progressed. What if he continues to improve with more major league time?

Just seems like a very cosmetic change if it's a minor ugrade which doesn't actually change our win expectancy. Rather use that money to absorb salary in a trade to reduce the prospect package for a big upgrade elsewhere.
 
I would like to see what Garcia and Ruiz can do if we can't get a clear upgrade. The only way I'd be game is signing Turner or involving Frazier in a Sale deal. Otherwise, let's just see what we have in Ruiz

As Yogi might have put it, if we upgrade third it should be with an upgrade. Someone like Longoria. I think it could happen, most likely at the deadline if we are above .500 or next off-season.

More consistent power, but not as good of a hitter... he may be a better defender, but I don't know if its that significant. The fact is that Plouffe is only a marginal upgrade at best. I mean Garcia had a wRC+ of 90 last year and Plouffe had a wRC+ of 91... there's really not much difference and a platoon would likely be quite a bit better.
 
The more I think about it, why not just see what Ruiz can do with Garcia spelling him? If he struggles, make it a straight platoon or just switch over to Garcia before making a deadline/off season move for an upgrade. Ruiz had a 117 wRC+ in AAA last year and a walk rate of 11.4%... at his age, you have to like that, especially after the adjustments he made. His K rate was a little higher than I'd like with his power output, but again... he's still really young. He could surprise quite a few people as a 22 year old, still growing into his power at 6'1" and 230.
 
Adonis put up an OPS of .789 in the second half (301 PAs). There is a case to be made that his baseline is around .740-750.
