Eric Garner doesn't get justice

So what happens if you didn't do anything illegal and you resist arrest and the same thing happened as Garner? Tough luck?

It doesn't matter what his actions preceding were. He was outnumbered 6 to 1 (3 cops and 3 guns holstered). He was on the ground crying uncle. Did you think he was gonna jump up into the air like a zombie from 28 days later and go ape****? Then I think some can agree a taser would br used before gun.

Why would you resist arrest? How does it benefit you?

Also agree the cop went too far.

I see. So you're wrong to resist arrest if you're guilty. You're even more wrong to resist if your innocent. Basically, you think the cops should be able to arrest whoever the **** they want without any resistance.

That is what the legal system is for.

Yes, because cooperating or not, you shouldn't be killed. You're justifying overreaction by saying it could have been avoided if he just submitted. I thought this was America, the land of the free, innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, etc.

Garner would have his chance in court if he cooperated, right?

I know you're addressing someone else, but let me jump in for a sec.

I'm not ok with it. Resisting arrest is generally dumb and dangerous for everyone involved. Obviously, context and circumstances matter, but I feel comfortable making that blanket statement.

I'm disappointed that two threads appear to have turned into discussions about resisting arrest. This is what I'm reading:

"[sotto voce] I think the officer should have been indicted.

BUT HOW ABOUT THAT RESISTING ARREST, HUH? WANNA TALK ABOUT HOW ALL OF THESE DEAD GUYS WERE RESISTING ARREST?"

It's missing the point, and these posts fall either just shy or well into the territory of blaming the victim. It's a tanget. Worth addressing, sure, but far from the largest issue here. There are a lot of huge societal and constitutional issues here that are more relevant.

I think it speaks to a big issue as well though. Obviously, I haven't found anyone that agrees with the cops actions in this case.

Why anyone would resist arrest makes zero sense to me....you aren't going to win. Why is your goal? Also, if you feel like you are going to be targeted, why wouldn't you go out of your way to comply in order to avoid giving the cop any reason to perform any unjust harassment?

THe Garner and Brown cases should not be linked together. One non violently resisted arrested until overcome by multiple offers; the other physically abused the officer and physically threatened an individual officer. The Garner officer could have let go of the chock hold and still subdued Garner.

Our justice system is so honest and fair, especially when it comes to holding cops accountable.

Bc one guy in NY unfairly got off? Is the legal system screwed up bc OJ can murder his ex-wife and get away with it? Or are there cases where justice simply doesn't avail?

I don't know..maybe Sturg feels like this cop WANTED to kill Garner. He really does hate cops.

I'll just give him the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe he's just really crappy with legals? Can be kind of dry material sometimes. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my 1 week class on them when I was at the criminal justice academy.

A common trend I see in this thread is the cop haters like Z and sturg are throwing out a lot of crap they hope will stick.

Z saying that plenty of unarmed people resist arrest and get killed every year, with no proof or numbers to back it up.

Sturg calling this murder when it's clearly not.

Why is this?
