GDT 10/7/23: Braves vs Philthies - NLDS Game 1

Game 6 lineup in 2021 vs Astros...
Eddie
Soler
FF
Riley
Duvall
Joc
Ozzie
TDA
Swanson

This current brave team doesn't really have any postseason success. They need to figure it out... by tomorrow

Lol, almost half that lineup is on this years team.

I think braves win tomorrow, but I'm not sure they can get it back to Atlanta.

They won’t need to.

We will kick their ass up there like we did in clinch series… and in game four the dread on their faces as Acuna and Ozuna and co flap their wings and “fly”around the bases as their dreams quickly die …. will be delicious.

It’s a shame because the lineup construction was nearly perfect (I would have flipped Albies and Ozuna), and the idea behind the lineup construction played out perfectly when Snit used Rosario perfectly. Then everyone dropped the ball offensively, opening up the door for criticism of the perfectly set lineup.

Oh, and strider was magnificent despite not being completely dialed in early.

Just a very frustrating loss considering how the rest of the series lines up. Strider vs Suarez really needed to be a win for the Braves, and they gave themselves an uphill battle by not showing up.

Stop whining

3 of 4 road teams won and last year the Braves and Dodgers lost after layoffs. They need to go back to 2 divisions and start with the NLCS.

That doesn't reach the threshold that I think should be called as catcher's interference. Do we think that end of that strap changed the swing plane/timing at all?

But I imagine it was called solely based off of sound and Realmuto's reaction, so there wasn't even an idea of whether there was anything substantial. It's a rare play and the implementation sucks by necessity (kind of like a pitch clock violation with 3 balls and the bases loaded), so maybe flip the standard for review and require clear video evidence that the bat hit the actual glove/body/mask?

The Braves lost because the offense didn’t show up. Anyone focusing on anything else is just reaching for excuses to ease the pain.

Why the offense didn’t show up is open for debate, but it certainly seems to be a result of the layoff. This offense hit a similar skid after the all star break. Whether that layoff is fair or not is also open for debate, but everyone knew the deal going into the season.

Like Encheff said, there isn’t enough of an advantage for the bye teams. With the layoff it’s hard to get the guys going again it seems and that’s a lot at stake for a 5 game series. I feel a 7 game series would be better so if you do come out cold you have a little time to recover.

Go back to 2 WCs, play the one game, and have that winner at the #1 seed the next day for a 7-game series

I think that’s probably the way to go. No extended layoff and make it affect their pitching availability from a do or die situation. However god forbid a team finishes above 500 and doesn’t have a strong chance of making the playoffs.

You could also make the wild card teams fly back and forth each day instead of the higher seed hosting all three games. The quickest fix that would even some of this out would be making LDS best of seven. Or a more radical option, allow the higher seed to host the entire LDS.

The question everyone should be asking is why doesn’t this layoff bother the Astros? Is this all just small sample noise, or do the Astros know something the Braves/Dodgers don’t?

My guess is this is all mostly small sample noise, but the fact remains the top teams aren’t given enough of an advantage for winning 100+ games.

Could the fact that even though they are a top two seed, the Astros were still playing for their playoff lives well into the last week of the season play into this?

Agree. You can't win a ballgame if you score 0 runs. And....Strider was great.. 1 ER and yes I know there was also and unearned run causes by his own error but his pitching was still great.

If mlb wants the 3 WCs, you could have the WC round as 5 game series to start with but the #1 seed gets a bye. Divisional round then be 7-game series. If you get rid of all the dumb skip days, the time frame would still fit
