GDT 6/10/19: Running it back vs the Pirates

it's fine for a bench player..but i don't see the Braves ever making him one. that's the part that makes it saddest for me.

With the strength of the rest of the lineup, Neck is fine as a regular. Yes, I wish they'd rest him more.

Nick gets a lot of hell here, but he's not an issue imo...

Nick's ranks among starters:
OBP #2
wRC+ #5
wOBA #4

I think he should sit some vs lhp, but I think he should lead off my rhp

You're right. I never understood how Bobby Cox and then Fredi let Chipper decide when he would play. That was crazy. Chipper is always going to want to play. And just about every player is like that. The manager is the one being paid to have the right perspective on rest and playing time.

Not like Chipper was ever a threat to play 162.

there is always a small sample size brigade ready to jump on Markakis's struggles and ignore the peripherals.

He should sit more. I don't think he needs to be platooned.

That is a bit of a myth. Chipper’s first season he played in 140 of 144 games (1995 was strike-shortened in April). Then over the next
Seven seasons he never played in fewer than 156 games, and even in season 9 he played in 153.

Due to injuries his games per season dropped significantly after that, but for his first 9 seasons he almost never had a day off.

Cool, how many years did he play 162?

Interesting note I read in an article on The Athletic -- we are one of four teams in baseball whose shifts have actually cost them runs defensively.

He’s been the whipping boy here since he signed with the Braves. People just love to hate him.

Sure hope not. Got tickets for Saturday, and don't really want to see Bryce Harper bouncing one off the chop house.

Feel like Newk might make that one.

Newk threw 55 last night. So he's got maybe 65-70 in him if he starts on Saturday. I think he will.

He's 7th in WAR among position players. If it wasn't for a bad back from Ender he would be the worst regular on the team.

hey why use numbers that encompass all of this and more (the "more" being the parts that drag Nick down to his real level) when i can cherry pick and make him look better than he is?

SSS brigade sounds like the people who want to pretend he's something he isn't. that being the player he was in the 1st half of last year...and not at any other time the last 5 years.

he had a 104 wRC+ vs. lefties last year.
it's 43 (!!!) this year.
it was 89 in 2017.
66 in 2016.
75 in 2015.
Platooning him is the easiest, simplest, most basic call that should be made. more should be done, though.
Markakis will be right around 1 WAR this year (despite you saying he'd be better in the offseason). that's a tough pill to swallow for a contending team when there could be options.
