GDT 7/13/24: Braves @ Padres - A Fox Game

A top 4 of Strider/Sale/Lopez/Fried could carry the team to a WS. Just sucks we're getting this version of Sale with him healthy, but Strider is hurt.

I really want to re-sign Fried. The offense might not be elite anymore but with that rotation now that Schwellenbach has shown his potential we wouldn't need to score a lot of runs.

There's still al lot more things that have gone right for the rotation than have gone wrong. Can't complain about overall luck.
In order to keep it that way, the Braves should really look to limit Sale's pitch count the rest of the season. No reason to let him go past 100 pitches all the time.

You're really asking too much of Snit.

I mean the money is there if they want to. The Braves are in the latter half of their contention window right now. If they need to backload some bad contracts as they transition from contention to rebuild then so be it.

But are the Braves or even us here wanting the team to invest the money it will take to sign Fried to a guy starting his age 31 season? I have not looked at any data as a possible indicator of decline, but he has had injuries plaguing him throughout his career and seems to be a risky investment imo...

That said, it might be wise to just pay the price and let the money sort itself out. Hopefully the FO learned a valuable lesson with FF.. sometimes it is just better to pony up money and keep stars who consistently produce versus extended players that come from poorly run orgs.

Afraid so...as good as Sale's been, I'm not expecting much from him in October. Chances are he'll either be injured, or worn out.

are you having an internal monologue... conversations with multiple personalities... Just wanting to do a welfare check if need be.

But why do you think Sale will be worn out? He isn't a young buck who doesn't know his body. I feel he will be fine if they control his starts a little better and he isn't legit hurt. There is enough throw away games towards the end of the season to let him rest... assuming the Braves don't push to catch the Faillies and just control the WC standings.

Easy now...just quoted the wrong post.

Sale is on pace to approach 200 IP, which he hasn't come close to since 2017. He has an injury history ranging from ribs through shoulder, elbow, wrist to his little finger. All of those are kinda important for a pitcher. He's 35 years old. He has a manager who treats him like a workhorse, instead of prioritizing keeping him fresh for October. All that seems to stack the odds against him, in my view.

Yeah, I sort of figured that.. .but I still thought you deserved a little razzing.

and I get what you are saying. I would love to pump the breaks on every starter not named quad A .. But you have to make the playoffs and you have to make them without destroying your pen. The Braves have already been employing a 6 man at times, so from a front office standpoint that is all they can do. Twit could look at pulling him more, I can agree with that, but there is a balancing act when you can do that and when you can't because some of the other starters had rough patches.

my point was that Sale probably knows his body pretty well and knows when it is getting too tired. If he is healthy come Oct, then I am not terribly worried about fatigue... I did add the caveat that if the Braves (twit) are gun ho about catching the division, then I would be concerned.

I think we need to prioritize the next 3 years rather than worry about giving a player a year or two too many years on a contract.

I think Sale is the one guy they need to put in bubble wrap, due to his fragility. They can ride Morton as hard as they like for all I care. Or let SS, Elder etc. eat some innings, as I don't think making the playoffs will be a major hurdle. With Sale, I'd like to at least limit the amount of pitches under high stress or fatigue. He shouldn't sniff 100 pitches in any remaining start, unless he's absolutely cruising along.

I have criticized Anthopoulos at times, but d'Arnaud has be one of his best--and probably the best--under-the-radar signings since he took over. d'Arnaud has been a key contributor since he's been in Atlanta.

If it's something he wants to do he needs to be put on the path to be Atlanta's next manager.

I’d like to see him dh more

Seriously. It’s an easy, in house fix for some of the lineup issues. Ozuna is good enough to stand in LF for 7 innings a game. Hell, you don’t even have to play both Murphy and TDA 5 out of 5 days. You can still give one of them a break from playing every few days and let Ozuna DH on those days.

You could also give Olson a day off against a lefty and have Ozuna at 1B.
