Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

Meanwhile, Northam is still governor of VA and Biden is still the favorite for next President.

But at least we got revenge on that 16 year old kid!

My point is that we are no longer a society that values and defends free expression... and there is a clear ideaology that is feeling that more than the other.

Of course we are. Any one can say, printt, draw or read whatever they want without fear of inprisonment.

Which is the meaning of free expression.

I’m seeing a lot of folks who demonstrate very little compassion for marginalized people, little regard for the full humanity of certain groups, and scant concern for young victims of state violence suddenly solemnly intoning about “grace” in the case of a teenager who thought (until it became public, anyway) that the n-word was hilarious.

I mean, it’s possible they have a point about grace and forgiveness, but where is that compassion otherwise? And why should grace and forgiveness on a personal level not be sufficient, in this case? Why should it be extended to acting as if this kid is entitled to a position that thousands of kids (maybe ones who aren’t racist) are competing for?

There’s a weird vibe of entitlement that runs through this whole “free speech”/“political correctness” discussion. Free expression is defined as the ability to maintain a revenue stream on a private platform. People who boil poverty down to bad choices all the sudden become fans of grace and forgiveness for bad choices when consequences touch a conservative white kid.

i'll second your motion for a wider dissemination of compassion, grace and forgiveness...especially for children and teenagers...even adults (of all ages) have a capacity to learn and grow and need some of that compassion, grace and forgiveness

Can you please elaborate how the two are related at all unless you think that dropping out of school or getting into drugs is akin to a kid using a form of speech that makes people uncomfortable/angry?

Like I said, the same people celebrating a kid paying for a racist convos as a teenager are surely unwilling to support Biden after several racist remarks.

They are absolutely calling for Northam to be removed.

Sarah Jeyong to be fired.

James Gunn to be fired.

Right?

You know the answer to that.

But the reaction will be 'intent' and that someone like Kyle is a 'bad' person who deserves to be stripped of his white privilege opportunity.

We’re...still...somehow throwing around words like “censorship” and “free expression.” And I’m still not sure where those principles have been violated.

There were considerable protests to Northam remaining in office. But, if you apply the Ron Paul “that was 30 years ago” standard to it, it must be ok with you, right? You’re Mr. Consistent Principles, no?

But let’s do just get on record for when and where the n-word is ok.
