Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I would have kept Duvall. But without a true platoon partner his usefulness is a bit diminished. Since it looks like Ender is being regulated to 4th OF status then that option is gone.
 
A very early assessment to be sure but I think with at least 9 seemingly quality starters and others waiting their turn, it shouldnt be that difficult to fill a void or two with quality position players. Still dont know what or how much money might or might not be available.

I definitely didn't (and wouldn't) call it a "positive contract" from an analytics standpoint by any means. That said, that's just who the Royals are - and have been - for a good while. They kept Hosmer, Moose, etc. when it would have been "smarter" to trade them for bigger returns because that's what their fans wanted and expected. That's not the way a lot of teams do business anymore - but that's OK - and doing business the way they do easily makes them a favorite landing spot for players.

Did signing a franchise icon for that kind of money compromise their available finances a little over the next few years? Sure it did. But after having talked to Greg Holland about the fans and type of "family environment" DMGM has built out there, it's really easy for me to believe that the vast majority of their fans don't care. They're several years away from being legitimate contenders again, and folks out there would just as soon see Salvy play his career out in a Royals' uniform if they're going to be a second-division (or worse) team.

He's their Freeman - at least to hear Greg tell it. Letting him walk legitimately would have caused as big (or bigger) an uproar as losing Freddie would cause around here.

Wonder if the fact that the Rangers' bullpen is in complete shambles (Matt Bush is probably their Closer following LeClerc's injury) makes a Gallo deal - to anyone - any more likely.

With Harris' spring coming when it did, a Waters and secondary arm offer for him suddenly looks like a pretty good idea. Acuna could slide over to CF while giving Pache the entire year if needed and he or Gallo could slide to LF when Ozuna shifts to DH next season. By the time Gallo's contract is up Harris should be ready to replace Gallo.

Its more than just ST... Wilson was on fire from the moment he came back up last year and was dynamite in the NLCS

I just don't buy that fans care that much about individual names on their teams rather than the overall record. I would trade every last player on this team tomorrow if it meant we could win a WS this year and be WS contenders for the next several years.

2020 Duvall and Riley almost identical in stats. Spring training almost identical in stats. Which you prefer, #1 at 600k or #2 at estimated 10 times as much?
Having said that, the glow is wearing off of Riley very fast IMO.

The thought struck me as a little strange as well when Greg first said it. Then I thought back on the dark ages when the Braves were so bad and realized I'd probably have gone looking for another team to pull for had they traded Murphy or Horner way back when. I was a bit older (and understood the business side of the game better) when a well past his prime Murph was finally shipped off, but it still REALLY stung, and I stayed *issed for a pretty long time.
 
Given the rapid increase in the number of arms going down, it's awfully hard for anyone to make a good argument for including several arms in a deal for the time being.

If ONE of them (preferably Wright, of course) paired with Waters gets you a left-handed OF power bat or with Waters and Riley gets you Ramirez or Chapman that's fine, but I'd want to hold onto every arm that has an option remaining that I could if I were AA.

What?

Quick glance shows this not to be the case

Riley 88 WRC+ overall and 99 WRC+ against LFHP

Duvall 116 WRC+ overall and 132 WRC+ against LHP

Duvall can actually help a contending team. Riley is not to that point yet.
