Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

Challenge for the Astros will be expanding payroll as guys like Correa become more expensive. Of course, they brought in McCann and Verlander (McCann with some money coming along and I don't know what the Tigers sent along with Verlander) so they must have some spare coin. Astros had a good run of drafts and they haven't squandered boatloads of talent to acquire guys, so they may be able to maintain this.

It will be interesting to see how teams like the Astros and Cubs handle their aging SPs.

I fully expect the Cubs to do the smart thing and let Arrieta walk. The problem is they replaced him with Q, who is good, but not Arrieta of a couple years ago great. They paid big money for Lester's decline, and are already seeing him start to fade going into his age 34 season with 3/85 or 4/100 still owed to him. Trading away prospects for BP arms and signing 30+ year old SPs to 9 figure deals isn't sustainable for any team.

Playing the now vs future game is tough, but I think the Cubs have leaned a little too much into the now.

Of course, one of these big market teams is going to get an Ace in Ohtani for essentially nothing and completely tip the balance in their favor, but I don't think any team is counting on winning that lottery as part of their long term plan.

Their payroll topped 120,000 on opening day this year. It will be interesting to see how high it goes. The Altuve deal is the equivalent of the Curry deal (not the one he just signed) for the Golden State Warriors.

They're showing about 75M commited and about 55M in projected arbitration with the current roster

I like what the Astros appear to be doing. I think the Cubs have spent too much prospect capital on win now moves and we can already see the end of their window.

Cubs farm is probably depleted, but with Contreras, Rizzo, Baez, Russell, Bryant, Heyward, Almora, Happ, Schwarber, and cash to sign players they're fine long-term.

They do need another SP to replace Arrieta and Lester's decline but Theo is good at this. Not like they're a small market.

Just what kinds of sanctions might be anticipated? Per Rosenthal, “a substantial fine, a loss of prospects and restrictions on the Braves’ participation in the international market” are all on the table. The devil here is in the details, of course, as that slate of possible demerits could either be relatively light or rather compelling, depending upon how extensively applied.

SCAPEGOAT!!!!

Totally a scapegoat. You know Rosenthal is a pawn right? RIGHT?!?!

The article says Hart will be going down too either because he knew and is complicit, or he didn't know and is incompetent. So yes, Coppy was fired as a scapegoat in hopes of saving Hart's job.

Why is this still so hard to understand? Every source that isn't affiliated with the Braves keep saying Coppynwas sacrificed. It's like Braves homers love the taste of sand.

It's not really a scapegoating if Coppy deserved what he got in his own right. He might have been fired quickly in hopes that MLB would be satisfied by that but it's not really scapegoating.

The TC article said Eddie and Terry will not be returning to Coaching staff.

They kept Snitker, kept Wash who just gives the green light to everyone, and Chuck Hernandez who isn’t doing a very good job of developing pitchers and we get rid of the somewhat decent and competent guys. I definitely thought Eddie was a lifer.

I've been so incredibly mad about this that I haven't even been on the board.

Like, I understand people want an upper hand on other teams. I get trying to win.

Coppy did some good things here, but I am so infuriated by this whole situation.

We FINALLY get a good farm system and start reworking things. The future is still bright, but my God this makes us look like the biggest tools ever.

Are there really any Braves fans that are vocally defending Hart? It seems like we're all on the same page that everybody needs to go. Coppy probably deserved to be fired, based on everything we've learned. Hart deserves to be fired too.

This is where I'm at. Either Hart knew and was complicit or he was asleep at the wheel. Either way, he should be gone.

Is sacrificial lamb better? Sometimes the lamb deserves to be sacrificed. But he is still a sacrificial lamb offered for the benefit of others.

That is retarded. Eddie and TP are the only good coaches on the staff, and they've been with the Braves forever.
