Minor League Thread Part Deux

I’m not googling current guys. I know Jeter and the like were all huge.

I was checking on cards from the 60s and 70s that I picked up in the late 80s and what I paid for them or found them for then.

I see some are up a little - but there’s not a “boom” to any of them.

Our local guys send cards all over but I don’t know a ton about what’s desirable. I’d think Witt rookie would be like getting a jeter and that’s not suprising.

Yeah no card from that era is going to randomly go up much at this point. It’s a well known quantity. Why would they boom? With modern cards, you have #/1 or #/5 cards now selling for 5 and 6 figures in actual auctions depending on the player. It’s a stupid gimmick to me but it creates known scarcity. The market is actually pretty huge right now because of how it’s turned into gambling.

I have a ton of cards from the early 90's I haven't touched in 30 years. But this was during an era when they were making TONS of these things and I probably couldn't sell the complete sets for what I paid for them.

Yup. The price for cards is all about scarcity. The cards from the 50's and 60's can be worth a lot because people weren't necessarily collecting them as valuables so not as many remain in good condition. Then the mass production started as the hobby grew and prices never took off besides your HOF player rookie cards and a few others here and there. Now they are forcing scarcity by printing small amounts of valuable cards and letting the market go wild.

that’s actually cool- glad they have done something to drive interest because it was such a great hobby. I noticed they really want you to buy by the box, figured that had something to do with it

I loved it. I’d spend an hour or two debating a buy or sell just looking through the glass cases.

Got the 91 Braves team set from the stadium. Can’t remember the line.

I think I mentioned him towards the beginning of the year. He was hitting the ball well from day one... him and Hartman (who I actually thought was going to be the better of the two HS OF signs) but Hartman has cooled off... Carey keeps hitting.
14% K-rate, which is really impressive for a guy who skipped the complex league altogether (as did Hartman). Thanks to Southcack who reported live on him. Maybe he gets moved up to Rome later in the season, but I would just keep him where he's at for the time-being. Nice to see what looks like some decent hitting prospects in the lower minors and I hope the player development staff lets them firm up their foundational skills before challenging them. Like Yogi Berra said, "Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical." From my perspective, that means letting younger guys build a belief in themselves before you throw them into a higher level of competition that could beat them down. I'd feel differently if Carey was a college-age player.

It's almost like Hurston realized that the tantalizing split/sink/whatever doesn't mean squat if you can't command your pitches. It's good to see him do this. If this development is real, the Braves are looking exponentially better at the top, while awaiting some good pitchers developing at the lower levels.

Good lord 50 you're preaching to me. The Braves emphasis on challenging players is really a blessing and a curse. I like for players to cook a little longer at each level so that they can adjust and see exactly where their projections take them.

As for Carey, the kids got a good makeup. My times seeing him, I saw a tenacious approach and a serious demeanor about him. The story goes that he spent the summer playing in a Collegiate League where every player was significantly better than high school teams. He wanted that. Maybe South saw this too, but his set up is compact at 6'0 about 180ish or more. A little like Baldwin. He has a good eye and now he's picking up loft in his swing. The Braves lucked out on him really. He wasn't in many draft 'experts' "to draft" guides. I think he's gonna be a 'find' for the Braves. I was going to call him "nails," but that guy was a dbag. His style of play is like that somewhat.

But wait... I was told that his splitter was not a great pitch by some know-it-all on this board.
Here we go lol. If Waldrep has real progression and can turn things around that's huge for us. If he can't be a SP he could definitely be a high leverage reliever

Isn’t the post your quoting stating Waldrep has had success because he’s using his splitter less?
The last few innings. I was watching the game at work. He was using his splitter and slider to great effect early. I think when whoever that is said less, I think it was less that the first few innings when he did throw that splitter/slider combo more. I think his first 3 strikeouts were on those, but I could be wrong.
