MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

One of these days, this organization is actually going to shoot for something.
It can be very frustrating. I feel like the only things this team needs to be a true championship contender is to fix up the bench, which we can do internally, sign a solid lefty reliever and sign a guy like Lester. I know that's much easier said than done. But this is a very good team that just has holes to be plugged.

Who would you be willing to give up for two months of Lester?

I'd draw the line under Peraza and Sims. No if they want those two.

But Bethancourt or Hursh or some other prospect or combination of prospects, we should seriously consider it.

So you want to trade Gattis? Put him in LF?

Exactly. There are two aspects to my willingness to trade Bethancourt. One is I think we have a very good #1 catcher and Bethancourt's value is not going to be maximized being his backup. Second, I think Bethancourt is a bit overrated.

Eric Chavez has retired. Not strictly relevant to trade deadline discussions, but worth noting the end of that career. You'll recall we all wanted him very badly in the off-season.

Don't see a point in going for starting pitching at this point. Sure it would be a nice luxury to have in the playoffs in a short series, but our hitting is going to be our downfall just has it has been all season. There are no easy fixes for that either, guys aren't performing like they should be and in RISP and 2 out situations.

The reason I'm interested in another starting pitcher is I think Harang is a bubble about to explode. A huge bubble. Bigger than the tulip mania bubble.

There's an argument that when you have one aspect of your team that's strong but not quite great, and another facet that's really weak, you should focus your resources on the former instead of the latter. Simply put, there are no realistic series of deals that can improve our offense to the point where it's a strength. You can (and probably should) fill in on the margins, but we're not going to be able to acquire a handful of starter-quality bats.

On the other hand, our starting pitching is in that good-not-great category, and one acquisition can push it into that great level. How much better does a Price/Lester/Hamels-Teheran-Santana LDS rotation look than a Teheran-Santana-Harang rotation?

Not saying we'll make any such move, or even that it would be a good idea; all of those guys would bleed the farm system significantly. But the thought process behind improving the starting rotation is sound.

I don't think Towers would do it without an unreasonable demand, but maybe he would. But would there be any interest here in acquiring Prado as a super-sub type guy? Might not fit now that TLS has been successful at second.

Not with his contract. We still have other guys that our money (when we free some up) needs to go to. Prado won't be back here until his current contract ends, if he ever comes back; unless his entire contract is essentially eaten.

Asked if rumors true that #orioles closing in on deal for Lester, Duquette said "That would be news to me."

Ken Rosenthal just said the team in on everyone and trying to be the most creative is Frank Wren and the Braves, but are struggling to get anything to materialize.
