Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

As much as I would like to see this, the Mets still have a good hitting core. They just wasted way too much money on 40 year old pitchers. But they can get out from under those contracts within 2 years (may be both by next year depending on innings pitched). So it's extremely unlikely they sell with a solid core and 100 million in payroll space becoming freed up.

Right now their hitting core is reliant on some of their prospects panning out though. Alvarez took a nice step this year. But outside of Alonso and Nimmo, they have McNeil who is 31 and his bat regressed big time this year. Lindor who is pushing 30 and bat regressed big time this year. Marte who is going on 35 and bat seems to have regressed. Baty and Vientos haven't proven anything on the major league level. Not sure how much they really have, plus their bullpen is atrocious.

Fascinating looking at the teams overall offensive numbers. 1st in OPS, WOBA, EV, ISO, Barrels, Hard Hit %.

The team is just killing it.

The Mets lineup isn’t very good and I don’t think there is much potential. Alonso is by far the Mets best hitter and he’s basically RH Olson. And while Alvarez and Baty should improve, Lindor and Nimmo are getting towards the wrong side of the aging curve.

If everyone lives up to expectation then sure, it’s maybe an above average lineup, but the ceiling is very low.

Except when they face Strider and turn into the 27 Yankees.

Lindor has completely underwhelmed me since coming to NY from Cleveland. Maybe I don't watch enough but just seems like he doesn't show up against us that much.

Lindor is having some bad luck in the BABIP dept. But even still, he's having a solid year offensively. And his EV is the highest of his career. He's not far of his career OPS, so I don't see this "big regression" you're talking about.

I do not consider Marte at 35 to be part of their hitting core. McNeil is probably done, but his rate stats are at career averages, so it's hard to really know with him. He had a similar yr in 2021 then bounced back to lead the league in hitting in 2022.

Either way Alvarez, Nimmo, Alsonso, and Lindor is a very solid hitting core and they are all still relatively young. They also have one of the better farm systems in baseball at the moment. The just isn't a need for them to sell off, particularly when you only need to win about 85 games to get the final playoff spot.

He’s one pace for 4.5 WAR this year but it has to rank in the top 1% of “whelmed” seasons ever.

Going to be a very interesting HOF candidate when he ends up with 70 WAR

Lindor seems to have peaked as a hitter with his age 24 season in Cleveland. So whether he has regressed or that season was a fluke, he still hasn't reached the heights or that season while in NY.

The Mets farm system is actually middle of the pack, especially when you account for the promotions of Baty and Vientos who were two of their top prospects and haven't produced at the majors.

Also, Alonso has one year until free agency so will be interesting to see what happens there. Not saying the Mets need a rebuild but it doesn't appear their current strategy of relying on rentals is working.

buying a championship is really hard thing to do.. unfortunately you are paying for players who were good for another team and there is no promise they will be good for you as well. Not only regression, but just meshing with the organization and new players. If you can't get a few homegrown prospects to hit then it will be almost impossible to win anything. The Braves have been lucky/good at hitting on so many homegrown talent. We wouldn't be even close to this level without that.. I mean, I don't want to type a list, but is is someone else wants to type a list of homegrown talent we currently have on the 40 man roster... it is very impressive.

He has regressed from Cleveland days for sure, but he's still a good hitter, particularly for a SS.

Absolutely. I guess my comment was more so to indicate he hasn't met the expectations of what Mets fans expected from him or Cohen paid for.

I mean if the market says you have to pay a SS hitting in the mid 700 ops 34 mill a year, then I guess you have to pay that.. Wait how much is Arcia again... LOLMets..

I mean Lindor is still a 4-5 WAR SS. That's absolutely worth 34 million. He might not be worth that in 2-3 years though.

I just can’t get on board with this. He gets a bump for position and being above average defensively. But I would hate him on my team at 34 mil. Like you said. The 7 year after that will be ugly.
