Official Offseason Thread

Yet you'd be all over Soler and his career -30 DRS.

Your sudden attempts to use stats in your arguments are adorable. Completely hypocritical after your endless rantings against advanced stats, but adorable nonetheless.

That’s why this is a really bizarre situation. Wonder if there’s something more we don’t know about.

The fact he is going on waivers means nobody wanted to trade for him. He appears to be a poor defender up the middle, but maybe it’s a lack of range and his glove would work better at 3b. Who knows?

He’s definitely an interesting fallback option at 3b, but I hope the Braves are aiming higher right now.

Arent several teams looking for help at 2nd? Not one of our needs. Tho those 111 runs, 73 rbi and 40 stolen bases have appeal to me for the bottom of our order just not clean up.

I don't really think that's fair on his defense. -4 DRS at second... in 2436 innings. -4 DRS at short... in 3075 innings. A single digit in a sample size that large isn't poor, it's average.

I don’t look at BRef, but UZR/150 doesn’t like him much.

If he were seen as a competent SS with an above average bat, something tells me the Os would be able to find a trade partner and wouldn’t be willing to let him go for nothing.

I looked at Fangraphs, not Ref, but I just personally prefer DRS to UZR. But even using UZR, he's a 3-4 WAR player only due to make $10 or 11 million. I'm utterly stumped as to why he isn't being dealt.

The fact that I'm the one that pointed out that you'd love a butcher like Soler, but would hate one like Mancini makes a difference?

I thought it was supposed to be about the numbers - regardless of who it was pointing out the numbers.

Which is it Mr. Trump???

Sigh....

Time for another ban.

Soler is much more gifted offensively with room for even more, which makes putting up with his poor defense more palatable. It really isn’t complicated...at all.

MLBTR finally posted their outlook for the Braves.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/offseason-outlook-atlanta-braves-9.html

It’s basically everything we’ve been discussing the last couple months. The projected 2020 payroll they list at $126M is inflated by a mystery $15M they label “Estimated player benefits to be paid”, so we can ignore it if we are comparing apples to apples from previous years.

Opening day payroll as we usually define it is currently ~$110M. We assumed ~$130M early, and have revised it to possibly the ~$140M area, with pipe dreams of $145M+. I’m still guessing it will be closer to $130M.

The name Caleb Smith is someone we haven’t discussed here. At first glance he seems to be a cheaper Teheran, so hopefully AA is aiming higher.

An odd mention in the group of Others To Consider in MLBTR's Top 25 trade candidates - Mike Clevinger.

Really hard to imagine them moving him but if they're looking for a really quick turnaround, moving Clevinger, Lindor, and Kluber ought to do just that. Say the Dodgers are willing to give up Verdugo, Ruiz, and Dustin May for Lindor and then shop Seager in another deal. The Indians could then potentially go to the Yankees and get Frazier, Andujar, and Garcia for Clevinger, and then to AA and maybe get Ender and Wright for Kluber. That would free up around $31 million for them.

Plug May and Wright into the rotation (with Garcia coming fast), sign Didi to replace Lindor, and add one of the Wheeler/Bumgarner/Hamels/Keuchel group to their rotation and they're right in the thick of things again with lots of controllable pieces and plenty of cheap pitching.

I’ll be back later to post 1000 words on something I can’t imagine happening that has nothing to do with the Braves.

It's the generic league offseason thread so it doesn't really matter.

If there's serious rumors they usually get their own thread anyways. Stop flirting.

I’ll also be sure to drop 10 names of guys who may get traded so I can come back and comment about being the first to mention the names if any of them end up being traded.
