Right...but the only way you fit him in in their situation at $18 million per at this point is by giving him a 6 year deal if AA is going to $100 million or more - at that point, you're compromising money they likely intend to offer Soto.

What the. Why do you think he would take a 6 year deal over the same money in 4.

Thames to Washington. Seems like Matt Adams' replacement.

I bet they trade for someone if they don't get Donaldson.

This clearly implies they are not in on JD. They went the patch together approach and hope Boom hits. I think you will only see small moves for the gNats from here on out.

Josh Donaldson remains in the picture for the #Nats, although the Atlanta #Braves certainly the clear-cut favorite to bring back the free-agent third baseman.

Yeah. That would go over well with the players and agents ever wanting to sign with AA. Not to mention JD and how he would head to another team immediately

Who cares players and agents screw over teams all the time. Him trying to hijack the team for more money is ridiculous if I'm the Braves I'm giving him a hard deadline if he takes it great if not have a backup plan in place and move on.

I don't - that's the point.

The fact that Donaldson has drug things out this long points toward him being more than happy to take the shorter deal as long as the money's there. As others have pointed out, it benefits the team much more if he's willing to take the lower-AAV spread out over more years (or with deferments) - the Gnats would simply budget that $25+ million per and invest the extra money if he were willing to help them get under the "cap", making it a much better deal for them in the long run. I don't think he has any interest in that - he wants his money, and he wants it as soon as he can get his hands on it. He would rather invest it for his own benefit than someone else's.

Nats are actually making some smart calculated moves, patching together potential for upside at a low investment with their recent signings.

Seems like this is something either the Nats or JD's agent would keep out there to keep the price point high.

Makes all the sense in the world for them at this point - they got their flag. Use what's left to add wildcard guys like Brock Holt, Brandon Kintzler/Fernando Rodney/Francisco Liriano, Alex Wood/Taijuan Walker on one-year deals and see if they can catch lightning in a bottle.

Rizzo has done a pretty good job putting together their roster. If JD did decide to go there, it's house money. It is a rather old roster minus Turner, Soto, and Robles though.

I'd probably trust murph3 over Bob Nightengale. In addition to being consistently wrong about everything, he's the guy who published an article about Hudson hating the Braves after he left, and then Tim had to call up Bowman to explain why Nightengale was an idiot.

I think the biggest danger now from the teams generally mentioned as "in" is that the Dodgers decide to jump back in. If they pony up the money (which they have plenty of room to do) and turn around and ship Turner to Texas or Minnesota, we're back to Square One. They'd add another prospect or two (Leody Taveras maybe?) that they could add to a Lindor/Clevinger/Betts package without using more of their own guys. Move Turner in a deal like that and spin Pederson off as part of a Betts deal, and they wouldn't be adding 2020 salary to sign Donaldson.

The Dodgers signing Donaldson would presumably imply Turner or Muncie being made available. I like this scenario for the Bravos.
