Official Playoff Thread

Seriously, they have to get rid of this 5 game series ****, and they’ve needed to do it since day one. That would cut down on some of this randomness.

Also, **** 3 wild cards and this current format. But, that will never happen.

Yeah, even the NBA changed their first round from best of 5 to best of 7 years ago. MLB needs to adopt it since they won’t drop this new format. I could see MLB adding an extra playoff slot to each league and formatting the playoff bracket to look like the NFL - only top seed gets a bye and then gets worst seed remaining in the next round.

When Cleveland bounces NY today, they will change the format next year. The bye was no advantage at all. Crazy to think that if we had lost a game to the Mets, we might have been better off

In our particular case, I don’t think we would have been. Fried and Strider wouldn’t have been any better. The Phillies beating us is somewhat random, but they really just exploited flaws that had reared their heads at points throughout the season.

I think they’ll keep this format until the sport inevitably expands to 32 teams and realigns. Then it’ll be 8 teams from each league.

I guess they could go to 7-game LDS, but people are going to have to accept there will be an element of randomness to any postseason. They can’t just go on forever. I would argue the NBA doesn’t even need the best of seven all the way through with the way their conferences are so top-heavy to begin with.

Expanding the playoffs allowed teams that proved over 162 games they weren’t good enough. Now we have a 5 seed playing a 6 seed for a chance to go to the World Series simply because they won a small sample size worth of games. Way to go MLB…great job!!!

So....Has Snit retired yet?

I would be fine with snit keeping his job, but AA hire him analytics guy as for in-game decisions. And of course, AA make it clear that in-game moves will be made according to analytics. Snit is a great babysitter, and I don't think that's a small deal, but his decision making in-game is bad

Yeah, my prior post was out of frustration for how this series was handled in some sense. I'm fine with Snit as long as there are actual tacticians on staff, but I don't think that is occurring. I really think Walt Weiss needs another role on the team while a tactician can take his place being in Snit's ear all game long.

I really get the analytics stuff when it comes to assessing the performance of players and Snit makes his share of boneheaded moves, but the Dodgers are probably the most in-game analytically driven team in baseball and they are sitting on the couch just like the Braves. People are frustrated over how Strider was handled in Game 3, but even the best rifle in the world is worthless if you don't have the bullets. The decision to start Strider was rolling the dice and everything thereafter was going to be rolling the dice. If Snitker goes, I won't be sad, but if anyone thinks it's going to make a 10-game difference in performance over the season, I think they are probably wrong.

I think we have a better team than the Phillies (and the Mets), but it's important to note they didn't have Harper for a long stretch this season and that probably cost them a few games. The NL East was stacked.

I can't believe the Dodgers won 111 games and Preller's deadline moves really paid off.

As for the whole "playoffs is a crap shoot" thing. Yep. Always has been.

I expect there will be some staff changes. Weiss could be a managerial candidate, maybe even Wash. The best thing that could happen is for this team to get an actual everyday LF who can hit both RHP and LHP adequately.

Its not just the analytics. Its the 'gut' decisions Snit got wrong.

So many people raised the red flag when Strider came out at 96 in the third and Snit couldn't see it with ****ing binoculars.

It was a pathetic decision that I think should call into question whether he should lead the team moving forward.

First off, there’s a user name from the past!

If the Guardians finish off the Yankees tonight or tomorrow, that will certainly only enhance the debate of whether rest is actually a bad thing in MLB against teams that played 2-3 postseason games. But MLB is not going to change this format after one season. Once MLB expands to 32 teams and realignment happens, then a change could happen again.

If they keep the format the same next year (and that almost certainly depends if the skanks get beat today) then the 2nd round should be 7 games but the 1 and 2 seed should start those series up 1-0 (so only 6 games max would be played)

Lol no.

Agreed. Probably go to 4 8-team divisions or 8 4-team divisions with first- and second-place teams in the first scenario and first-place teams in the second scenario making the playoffs. I think this year's set-up was a bit odd.

Does pulling Strider all of a sudden make the offense start to hit? Because that was the problem this series, pitching wasnt good either. I dont know if a 7 game series changes much either, probably still go down. MLB playoffs are a crapshoot, just get in and see what happens.

I think Strider should have been pulled earlier, but if he was that much of a question mark going into the series, they should have made Strider's start(s) bullpen games from the get-go or structured the pitching staff differently. At any rate, you're going to be relying on Odorizzi to eat innings (perhaps multiple times). Not saying that couldn't work, but Strider not being 100% was a big issue. That said, I suppose you can say the same about Scherzer and the Mets.

But at base level, your point is on the mark. The feast-or-famine nature of our offense didn't net the results we desired.
