This is the kidn of **** that pisses me off.
One of the aspects that I am consistently seeing overlooked in purely statistical valuations of Jason Heyward is the dude's pristine marketability, which is especially relevant in a demographic setting like metro Atlanta and its suburbs.
It doesn't seem as though he has fully embraced a Captain-like leadership role on the team, but if I'm weighing the pros of a long-term extension that is the kind of trajectory I see evolving for him. That, combined with what is by all accounts a sensational work ethic, media friendly attitude, and strong presence in the community are all elements that deserve some monetary weight.
Maybe Premier Hart doesn't see Heyward in a 'Franchise' light. If he does, then the posture needs to redirect toward public accommodation in rather short order. No more of this cavalier, tight-lipped, smarmy 'we'll see in a year' nonsense. The language should be more along the lines of, 'We want this guy to be a part of the core of our club for years to come.' Period.
Heyward is worth $20MM+ per year, right now. If his defensive contributions in 2015 match those demonstrated in 2013/14 and he improves offensively, even menially, his market value is going to be reasonably beyond the team's means. Now is the time to lock him down, IMO.
this is why you should extent guys in their 2nd pre arb year
Always negative, yeesh.
It's like Hart didn't take AerchAngel seriously.
I don't understand how people can be upset. We seemingly have done everything we could to retain Jason as long as possible within our means. He never seemed open to a long term extension in the past, and always seemed intent on reaching free agency.
@DOBrienAJC: John Hart said #Braves love Heyward, but doesn't anticipate ext. in final year before FA: "My assumption is it's probably the wrong time."
