Starting over...who are the untouchables?

COGPK

Arizona Fall Leaguer
I have always said that NOBODY is untouchable. If a trade improves the team, you do it. However, there are those guys that I would like to see us keep. They are Freeman, Simmons, Bethancourt, Heyward, Wood, Teheran and Kimbrell. Of course there are guys in the minors as well. What say you?

Well, Mr. O'Reilly, that would pretty much be my list except for Bethancourt and Simmons. Simmons is an all-time all-time fielder, but I just don't think he's ever going to hit, which makes him a bit of a luxury on a poor-hitting team. Only other caveat is that it could be an either/or on J. Upton and Heyward depending on if either is willing to sign an extension. I don't know if they can afford both and if they can't, I think I would opt for Heyward.

Teheran, Wood, Kimbrel, Heyward, Freeman, Simmons, Justin, Gattis. And I only trade Minor if we can get a quality 3B or CF and a relief arm.

Agreed. Though I would consider probably anyone if the offer was so great I had to do so. But that isn't likely so just saying before someone says everyone has a price.

No one. Period.

However, if the list becomes "who's going to be hardest to pry away", I'd say...

Teheran
Wood
Freeman
Simmons
Kimbrel
J-Up
Gattis (if not traded for an inexpensive, controllable SP)
Peraza
Bethancourt
Heyward

At least one of Heyward or J-Up has to be traded, and likely this winter. Whichever one is traded MUST bring back an inexpensive MLB-ready SP.

Why does one of them have to be traded? In fact, I'd argue that it would be really dumb and counter-intuitive to trade either of them at this point.

Because we can't extend both with ANY of B. J.'s contract on the books - it's a financial impossibility unless Liberty suddenly sells the team to someone that's willing to roll the dice and boost payroll another $20 million in the hopes that they'll recover the investment in playoff revenues and revenues from the new stadium.

We have TWO SPs next season as of today if you let Santana leave - you can't possibly reasonably count on anything from Medlen or Beachy, and Minor's dealing with shoulder issues again. You don't get as lucky as we did with Santana and Harang again.

Untouchables, as in the price is so high the other team would have to be stupid to do it, are Teheran, Wood, and Peraza.

The more I have thought about it the more I favor trading Justin, Heywood, Kimbrel and maybe even Simmons. We all kind of agree that the offense can't possibly get worse, so why should we pay Heywood and Justin big money? With Freeman we have 3 players that will be making 20+ million a year soon. An epically bad offense doesn't need 3 huge contracts to be epically bad.

If we can get a team to pay like they think they can re-sign them I would do it. Both the Red Sox And Yankees could use either of them. Simmons I am not 100% on trading but I would try and pair him with BJ to unload most of that contract. The Yankees need a SS and 20 years of Jeter is going to make Andrelton look extra special on defense. Kimbrel I am not 100% on trading either.

To the question.

Probably only Wood, Julio, Freeman, Simmons, Peraza (if he's the real deal) are "untouchable" to me.

I'd keep Kimbrel, but his contract is tradeable.

With JUp/Heyward's contract condundrum, neither are untouchable.

With Gattis' ****ty defense, he's not either.

Everyone else is fair game.

Uggla's deal is off the books when JH/JUp are due, they can keep both for sure.

Whether both or either re-sign is a better question.

Toughest to trade for me are

1. Freddie
2. Jason (even at 1 year, hard to trade him, need to keep him a brave for life like we're doing with Freddie)
3. Kimbrel (I'd trade him but you have to blow down my door to get him)
4. Julio
5. Gattis

After that I pretty much will trade anyone. Wood is a hard one for me. his output is insane, but I'm still nervous about his mechanics. It's a similar feeling I had with Hanson, I can't pinpoint what's going on, but it just looks bad. He may have a timing issue but without a solid slomo or stopmo i can't really pin point it. But it's hard to believe with the angle and number of moving parts that he doesn't have bad mechanics.

All things considered, I would say no one is untouchable.

Top 5 I think WILL be heavily shopped:

1. BJ
2. Heyward
3. Gattis/Bethancourt
4. Minor (if he doesn't need surgery, Hale if he does)
5. CJ

BJ, yes.

Heyward if he declines an extension, possibly.

Gattis i can see.

I disagree on Minor for the simple fact this is our rotation next year : Julio, Wood, Minor, ?, Hale? We dont have many quality arms. Maybe sign Harang again but he's a good bet to regress big-time next year.

CJ i'd shop but who replaces him?

Jason cant be 2 for the simple fact of his contract status. I have no idea what he'd fetch in a trade but if he declines a trade, i'd trade him. Better that than a lousy comp pick. And lets be real, we're not winning a WS next year, the team isnt that good.

Kimbrel is awesome, all-time great health provided but closers arent valued much anymore.

Gattis cant be either since his defense sucks.

I agree with you on Wood but as of now, he's gotta be up there.

Would suck to trade Heyward. He's easily one of those you don't know what you have until he's gone type of players.

Hasn't even really hit his prime yet which is the scary part.

I'd trade Gattis/Bethancourt, whichever would be more attractive in unloading BJ's contract. I'd trade LaStella/Gosselin/Avilan/Walden/Shreve if it meant unloading CJ's contract.

I might be in the minority, but I actually would not hesitate to trade Freeman. I don't see his power numbers surging any higher than his career average. I don't see him being a 40hr guy, but maybe some other team does.

Wood, Teheran, Heyward, Justin, Simmons would be the only guys I wouldn't trade. Kimbrel maybe but I think Kimbrel could net a huge basket of value.

I really think Heyward is going to be the surprise trade.

I'm guessing the Upton brothers being traded in the same package will be the surprise trade. Watch. They'll probably get traded to the Yankees for a package that includes Martin Prado (LOL).
