didn't we do all of this money stuff last year and the Braves just picked it strait? They went BPA on their board so there were some surprises with Riley and Sorka...but I don't think they did any games.

Yeah, but it seems like this year we are pretty clearly going to play the slot game, from the reports of being 'desperate' to add a pick and the rumors of us trying to get 2 of our top 5 hitters.

This is a very good point. The Braves had 6 of the top 100 picks and didn't do anything odd with their bonus money. Allard and Riley got a little extra cash thrown their way, but that's the extent of it.

It is very possible the Braves just wanted more picks and this was the last year they were willing to spend cash on picks instead of MLB talent.

I think it's possible they know that the MLB is far from a science and they just want another lottery ticket.

But we will see.

Totally agree, its very possible they don't want to play any slot games and just want the ability to add another top-100 draft pick to the system.

I think they have a couple scenarios built out, they have the ammo to play the slot game if somebody they love falls - or they can just pick straight BPA and come away with 5 top-80 draft picks. Both scenarios are very good.

maybe they have their eyes on a prep arm who has committed to college and they are going to try and pry him away with an above slot deal at 76 or something.

I've always been in the crowd that has thought we'll be pretty predictable when draft time rolls around - not in "who" we pick, but more that we've never really tried to game the system. Gotta say I'm with smootness at this point though - there's just a feeling that this may well be the time we try it. It's definitely useless to try to put much weight in what Coppy's said thus far because he's straddled the fence pretty effectively, but...

1.) This is the first time that we've ever really been in the financial position AND are picking high enough that we actually can try to be creative - much of that opportunity's lost when you're picking 7th since several of the players you can try to be flexible with are gone, not to mention that you don't have the requisite pool money to try to get a guy like Cameron to drop to you if you're not willing to sacrifice picks the next season, and...

2.) This is one of those odd draft classes where it's easier to separate a select few targets that you feel pretty confident in having higher ceilings and then kinda clump everyone else together - even if the depth of the higher-ceiling guys isn't as good as it's been in previous years.

If you were to compile a list of targets with our top 3 picks, you'd have a pretty easy time coming up with guys that could potentially be available. In no particular order...

Lewis

Moniak

Rutherford

Puk

Pint

Groome

Senzel

Lowe

Collins

Thaiss

Benson

Shore

Kieboom

Sean Murphy

Out of that group, we're legitimately in a position to land 3 of those 14 with our picks. I can't recall a time that we've ever been in that kind of situation.

The biggest difference in this years draft is the #3 pick along with the total money. It is much easier to play the slot game from 1,2,3 than it is at 17.

From 2015:

Kolby Allard -- bonus $3,042,400, slot value $2,842,400 = $300,000 over slot
Mike Soroka -- bonus $1,974,700, slot value $1,974,700 = even
Austin Riley -- bonus $1,600,000, slot value $1,506,400 = $93,600 over slot
Lucas Herbert -- bonus $1,125,200, slot value $1,125,200 = even
AJ Minter -- bonus $814,300, slot value $814,300 = even

I can't remember how much you can go over without getting penalized, but the Braves even went over slot on Josh Graham and Taylor Lewis. Their biggest under slot savings came on Guardado and Stephen Moore.

I'm guessing the $300,000 over slot for Allard was part of the agreement for Allard to basically tell people he wanted to play in Atlanta.

As I recall Allard signed very late. At one point it looked like he wouldn't. So the idea that his heart was set on Atlanta from the start seems to have an element of revisionist history.

Eh, I never doubted he would sign. But you may be right.

Actually I think he waited until every other Atlanta draftee was signed so he could get every last drop of cash the Braves had left to spend on draft bonuses.

I remember Keith Law saying this a few months ago, but he was saying how teams should never have to sign guys over slot with this system. We should always be able to sign someone for at most the value of the pick immediately after ours, because if we didn't select them, that's the slot value they would get if they were taken with the next pick.

Obviously that situation isn't always going to be the case, but I did think it was a good point in terms of our situation.

5% - we can currently go to $13,885,305 with our picks through Round 10 and it only costs a 75% tax on the overage. Anything between 5% and 15% over costs a 75% tax on the overage PLUS our 1st Round pick in 2017.

Yeah, I think you should be able to get away with this quite a bit, but at the same time, you don't want to make a habit of angering guys you're adding to your system, and some guys have more leverage or are more willing to not sign.
