You guys do know that a republic IS a democracy, right? It's a representative democracy ala the House of Burguesses in Virginia and somewhat like ancient Rome, rather than a direct democracy ala ancient Athens and the town hall meetings of the New England colonies during colonial days.
Folks need to read their Gordon Wood. He's a little too stuck on the Founders, but he charts America's path from the Republic envisioned by them to the more democratic system that it morphed into within two generations.
