The Trump Presidency

It's definitely a mistake for Trump to tie himself so closely to markets. Markets can go down in great economic times and vice versa.

The problem with 57 is he actually thinks the market decline yesterday was related to Trump

You don’t have to convince me that Trump isn’t a political savant.

This is more about the satisfaction our resident Matt Yglesias retweet factory takes in celebrating when these things happen.

Another Amtrak crash. Who needs regulations?

American public rail transit (broadly/narrowly/specifically) is an obscenely embarrassing joke. Especially when you compare it to JR ... or DB ... or even freaking Virgin Trains. I wasn’t especially keen on the Obama stim package, but monies allocated to things like the SF - LA high speed rail line were spot on, and it’s a shame that nothing has come of any of it yet.

I'm not gonna pretend to understand what makes the Dow rise or fall,

but I do know that if you brag about how you're responsible for it soaring,

you fookin' well bet you get the blame when it sinks.

If only Ted Kennedy were still alive, we could have a "treasonous Ted" tweet. Maybe Tim Kaine will step up to the plate. "Treasonous Timmy."

Well off the top of my head:
Tammy Baldwin
Tom Carper
Tammy Duckworth
Tom Udall.

I would love for him to call Tammy Duckworth Treasonous Tammy.

Did Trump goose the otherwise stable economy too much? "If it ain't broke..."

Still, all of this would be manageable if key policymakers could be counted on to act effectively. Which is where I get worried.

It’s surely not a good thing that Trump got rid of one of the most distinguished Federal Reserve chairs in history just before markets started to flash some warning signs. Jerome Powell, Janet Yellen’s replacement, seems like a reasonable guy. But we have no idea how well he would handle a crisis if one developed.

Meanwhile, the current secretary of the Treasury — who declared of Davos, “I don’t think it’s a hangout for globalists” — may be the least distinguished, least informed individual ever to hold that position.

So are we heading for trouble? Too soon to tell. But if we are, rest assured that we’ll have the worst possible people on the case.

The issue is the wisdom of a fairly significant amount of fiscal stimulus at a time when the unemployment rate is 4% and falling.

Btw, Brunson is still rotting away in a Turkish prison...

They should really just hand Gulen over for him. Might not be right but it won't even be the worst thing the government does on that particular day. No country that leads the world in incarceration rate has any moral high ground to look down upon Turkey. Gulen appears to be the leader of a terrorist group. He should return to his country and get his day in court.

A separate review by the Environmental Protection Agency concluded in December that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other products, is not likely to cause cancer at typical levels of exposure.

Roundup, made by the agribusiness giant Monsanto, is the world’s most widely used weed killer and has been sprayed on corn, soybeans, cotton and other crops since the 1970s. It is also widely used on lawns and golf courses.
