Thread for Games ...

Saw this stat and had to post.

Greg Maddux faced 20,421 batters in his career
310 of them saw a 3-0 count
177 of those were intentional walks.

He was insanely good, however, that stat is not entirely true. Pitch data was not collected prior to 1988.. so there are 2 years missing IIRC..

Maybe it doesnt include before 88 but those stats should still be on record so I don't know why they wouldn't include it. It wouldn't change a lot anyways. Maybe he would be at 400 3-0 counts.

I checked B-ref. They don't include them. That is an insane stat, that is hard to believe. Even if it is 500, that is incredible.. But then I think about watching him and I hardly remembered a 2-0 count really. and those stats are pretty sick too.. 471 2-0 counts Post '87..

I hope Luke Jackson was working on his off-speed stuff or something, because today's line looks like a ticket to Gwinnett.

There have been more Braves pitchers this spring who have given up 5+ runs without ever getting an out than I can ever remember. I can think of 4-5 different times. (Danks, Jackson, Weigel, Boyer have all done it I know..)

Lane Adams finally got a start today (usually just used to pinch hit and come on late as defensive replacement in ST). He went 2-4 with a stolen base and run scored starting in RF. I mention him because he is a CFer who can play all three OF positions well and has good speed and stolen base ability (Lane stole 44 bases to only 5 CS last season in the minors) and seems to have a good arm too (threw out a runner at the plate from RF with a strong throw one game). He is also a right handed hitter so why not give him a real shot? I like his potential to be at least a solid 4th outfielder.

PS: I am just saw that Lane Adams also made a great catch and strong throw with the bases loaded no outs in the 7th to keep Houston from scoring (not even a sac-fly on a line drive he ran down in RF thanks to his strong throw after the catch).

I know it's just spring training but the Braves have the worst record thus far. Not really inspiring the fan base here.

I'll be honest when I say I have no idea who he is but a strong defender at all 3 OF positions with speed seems suitable for a 4th OF spot and maybe why we aren't going hard after Pagan.

I'd rather have decent bats than strong defenders on the major league bench, especially if we are going with 8 in the pen. I'd stash a strong defensive shortstop and center fielder in AAA for callups as needed.

Ruiz and Walker are having really nice springs. Ruiz still has tons of potential with his raw skills and his work ethic... plus youth is still really on his side. People forget how young Ruiz is because he has been around forever. But if he can start tapping into some game power, watch out.

Boni is the only other option unless Pagan is signed which seems unlikely now. So why they won't let Lane Adams start more games I don't know, why did it take so long into Spring to even give him a start? It's as if they decided on Boni from the start and no one but Micah Johnson was going to get a shot at outplaying him. I rather have a real competition at least before going with Boni.

That would be ideal but a decent bench bat would likely be good enough to start on this team.

If we don't add another bat for the bench, I'd be fine with Ruiz making the team. As long as he gets some games at third. I don't think it makes sense to just carry him as a pinch hitter.

The bench would be Suzuki, Ruiz, Bonifacio and Jace.

D'Arnauld would be odd man out. It makes more sense to carry two lefty bats than two righty bats. I know Bonifacio is a switch hitter, but he hits a lot better from the right side. For pinch hitting purposes he is a righty bat.

Jace and Bonifacio can also fill in as defensive replacement/pinch runner for Kemp as needed.

I think the best scenario is this: Garcia starts hot and gets a decent prospect from a team needing a 3B near the deadline. Ruiz plays every day at AAA and progresses... he starts the whole second half of the year to see what we have.
