Tim Hudson signs with Giants

I just wonder if Halladay has anything left. He's been horrible the last two years. I just wonder if he can get it back

He wouldn't be asked to be the ACE here, not even the #2 or #3. We have Minor, Medlen, Teheran who can be the top 3.

In Philly, the last two years he was counted on to be the #2 behind Hamels.

I think if we could get him on the low for a slick deal, to be the #4 or #5, he could be serviceable. I mean he's pitcher, not a thrower. Pedro had to reinvent himself when his velocity sunk under 90 mph, Doc can do it. Hudson is approaching that time when he can't throw 90 regularly anymore either. If we can get Doc for an 8th of the price of Hudson, it's a no brainer.

Good points, yes. It is a bit of a gamble for anyone who signs Halladay. But, if he can find at least part of what he was even just three or four years ago, that would be big.

I hate to see Hudson go. We are undergoing one hell of a youth movement losing Chipper,McCann, and Hudson in two seasons. Only player that is 30 or older and likely to be on the opening day roster is Laird.

Looks like we may yet again have the youngest team.

Wow terrible deal for the Giants.

They give him a raise while coming off a pretty serious injury with his age and he was having the worst yr he's had since 06.

I certainly wish no will towards Huddy and hope he proves me wrong. But I can't imgine him performing up to this deal. At the same time, I'm glad he found some fool to give him the contract he was looking for. Very happy for Huddy regardless how he performs.

Whats Brian Wilson doing these days?

Yankees were gonna go after him but he wont shave his beard.

Would love Wilson on a 2-3 year deal.

Have the money if they want to spend it on him.

I am so sad to see Huddy go, but it is what it is I guess. I hate the Giants, but I wish him luck individually anyhow (though not against us).

I just hope we actually get a good vet starter now, but I am not convinced we will.

Braves have been very consistent here. They let Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz walk at similar stages in their career. If they wanted Hudson that bad, they wouldl have pffered him arbitration. They didn't because they were afraid he'd accept one year at $14 mil. More surprised that this was direction Giants were going.

Hate to see him go, but just way too much money for the Braves to match. I'm still in the camp that believes a veteran starter needs to be added to the rotation. Still don't want to rely too much on the young guys.

The question is though when do the young guys become veterans? Minor/Medlen should be in that boat already.

They're veterans by book definition, as they're no longer rookies or sophomores, but they're not seasoned vets yet.

I'd say 3-4 full seasons under their belts would qualify. Medlen's only had 1 full season (this year) as a starter, Minor with 2.

What we need is good players, regardless of whether they are seasoned vets or youngsters.

Wood is young, but better than guys like Halladay and Santana. If we can get a vet who is better than Wood for a reasonable price, we should go for it. But I'm ok with a rotation of Medlen, Minor, Beachy, Teheran and Wood, with Hale the main reserve.

You look at the post-season and there were great performances from young pitchers like Sonny Gray and Wacha. There were great performances from veterans. What matters is not youth or experience, but talent and an ability to play well under pressure.

I'm just apathetic about this whole thing. I would've been fine had we given Huddy a similar deal, but I'm fine that we didn't as well.

I'm not sold on Beachy just yet. I would feel better with another arm in the rotation or at the very least bolster the bullpen.

Serious question or two: Was Wren not quoted early in the off season as "Look for a TOR starter" and has now downgraded his posture to a veteran starter?

And seriously looking for responses: Why did Wren even make an offer to LaTroy Hawkins even tho the offer was not that great? Dont we have enough set up guys.

If we need an extra arm in the rotation we have some decent options in Hale and Martin. I think those two are likely to be better pitchers in 2014 than Halladay and Santana.

As for the pen, I do think we need another lefty. I'd go for either Oliver Perez or EOF among the current free agents.

.

Seasoned, fresh, or stretched out, you can't go wrong with some good Wood.

Then you look at the great performances from young pitchers like Kris Medlen and Julio Teheran. :Alone:
