Trade deadline thread

Wonder if Eduardo Rodriguez is available. He has an opt-out after this season. He’s not particularly young and probably doesn’t fit Detroit’s current timeline. He’d be a great fit and may opt in (very reasonable contract) if he does to an org like atlanta.

If Ohtani leaves, the Angels are likely to be sucky next year anyways. Whatever prospects they might get back for him aren't likely to change to the outcome for the 2024 season. And after 4 straight seasons of sub .500 baseball, 3 of which with 2 transcendent superstars, he would absolutely be fired.

So this is absolutely a move in an attempt to save his job. I don't know how you can characterize it as dumb. He isn't gonna be around for the rebuild anyways.

A phenomenal return for Ohtani might be enough to save the Angels GM's job. If he could amass a nice core of prospects so the future looks bright, maybe he stays. Probably not but the odds are way better than them winning it this year.

More importantly, I'd be concerned about my future job prospects. If he does a good job with an Ohtani trade, even if he does get fired it's something other teams will look favorably on. Instead, he's keeping Ohtani, trading what prospects they have for rentals, and going for it. If they don't win, Ohtani leaves, and the Angels cupboards are left bare then I wouldn't hire that GM to empty trash at my stadium if I'm another team.

Meh. Carp is right on the money here imo. Overall as a baseball move it's poor but the guy is trying to keep his job. Similar to how Preller operates. That said, if and when he gets fired he wasn't going to get another GM job right away anywas. If anything he would go the AA route and go be an assistant somewhere and then possiibly get another GM job in the future.

There's very little chance he'd get another GM job immediately but I wouldn't hire him as an assistant if this move blows up in his face. Also, this decision flopping would definitely hurt his chances of getting another GM job down the road.

In any event, it's a dumb baseball move no matter how you look at it.

1. No one is trading a "phenomenal return" for half a season of Ohtani. They might be able to pull 1 elite-ish 55/60 FV type of prospect and a couple more 45 FV type of guys. Maybe they could snag a bit better package if they take on some money for a team up against the luxury tax. Either way, it is unrealistic to expect the Halos to get more than roughly 50-60 million in prospect value. They simply aren't getting a franchise changing prospect package for 3 months of Ohtani.

2. It isn't just about winning the WS. A playoff appearance, and more specifically winning a playoff series, would buy him a ton of favor with the fans, ownership, and potentially Ohtani himself in hopes of resigning him.

3. 1 trade isn't gonna sway the decision on whether or not he is hired again as a GM. He's made some pretty poor FA decisions, the farm system is worse than when he took over, and he's wasting the prime years of arguably the 2 best players in the sport.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Perry Minasian ends up with the Braves. Prior to the Angels, he’s basically followed AA around.

Everyone is all over the Angels GM, but at the end of the day, it appears that Arte Moreno is the one really pulling the strings regarding the Ohtani situation.

As long as that dude is the owner, they are going to be a statement of mediocrity

If we can grab Jared Walsh and he can play left field is a solid move. He is just 25 years old and from GA. Lefty batter and he can play firstbase too.

( Actually he is 29 years old )

It appears the Pads have had a change of heart and both Hader and Snell are expected to be traded, with Hader being one with a higher chance.

I wouldn't. But that is hardly enough.

Not as far off as you may think. Both Hader and Snell are free agents at the end of the year. They would be getting a starter who made the all star team this season with multiple years of control left.

And just because I said Elder doesn't mean it'd be a 1 for 2 trade. We'd probably have to kick in a prospect as well.

This would obviously be an all in move for this season. But it'd be one that we could absorb without sacrificing our window of contention.

This deadline is going to be bad for buyers as everyone is buyers. Teams that should be selling aren't.

IMO, the Giolito trade seemed sort of underwhelming given that he seems to be the best starter that is actually available. I would expect Jordan Montgomery to be next. My guess is the O's.

Edit: looks like Snell is available, so that makes him the best starter available.

I fail to see how Elder for half a season of Snell and Hader "isn't enough." I get that he isn't quite as good as his pre-AS break performance would have you believe, but he's a very solid MOR with 5 years left of control. That seems like a fairly steep price for 2 rental pitchers.

I think Elder would be quite attractive to a team like San Diego who probably still wants to compete in the near future

Is a steep price for sure. No doubt. But gives you 2 impact pieces for the stretch run. We could also theoretically add another innings eater type starter, or roll with Soroka

Considering the return for Giolito, if the deadline passes without us getting a starter I will be scratching my head.

Dodgers and Cardinals are talking about a deal for Arenado. Arenado apparently has told the Cardinals he will only waive the no trade clause to go to the Dodgers (he is from California).

Wonder if they get smart and do a fire sale. They have some pieces that could make it a quick turn around.

Here's a question, would they trade Paul Goldschmidt? He's a free agent after next season. His salary might be hard to fit into the payroll for next year but there would be worse things than having him and Olson handle 1B/DH duties.
