Varvaro traded to Red Sox for RHP Kurcz

No. If anything FIP is unfair to flyball pitchers.

That's fair. I wasn't quite sure how that went.

I think it's fair to be skeptical of Johnson moving forward since he has recent history of relying more heavily on luck than other successful relievers.

I think the bigger concern with JJ is whether or not he's going to have control moving forward. If that regresses back to the mean than I think there is a fair chance he can be a useful guy.

Well it is also unfair. Which is important to some of us.

Ultimately, FIP is neither fair nor unfair. It is a statistic that can be used correctly or incorrectly, with context or without context.

When we speak of it being "unfair" to flyball pitchers, this is:

1) referring to a very minor effect for a small number of pitchers
2) merely something that should be considered when evaluating future potential

FIP doesn't treat any pitcher differently than any other, so it is equally "fair." FIP doesn't capture all sorts of value, because that's not what it is for.

I prefer baseball ref war too for pitchers. But going forward I don't think Johnson will be all that good. Most relievers peak for 2-3 years and are done. I think Vavaro would of been a better option from 2015 forward. Not that it matters much.

Wait, there isn't one WAR to rule them all?

So we cut a durable Vavarro but keep David Carpenter....

I for one think Carpenter is clearly better than Varvaro. I mean he's just a 7th inning guy to be sure, but Carp seems to get a bad rap around here.

The main reason I don't like this move is because Varvaro is a guy who can go multiple innings in addition to the typical one inning as everyone else.

Don't fret, I have reason to believe that Varvaro will be replaced by South Carolina's own Michael Kohn. :)
