GDT #17, 4/19/14: Braves (Santana) @ Mets (Colon) 7:10 PM

Kimbrel aside, starting to have some concerns about the rest of our bullpen. Walden has been good, but Avilan and Carpenter haven't been that great so far.

Not worried about Avilan.

Never thought of Carpenter that much last year, he has control issues and gets away with bad pitches mainly because of his stuff moreso than anything. The Uribe thing made me dislike him in the setup position even more.

I just want Fredi to slide Walden back into 8th now that he's healthy and Carpenter is getting exposed in the 8th inning.

#Braves Kimbrel: “That was pretty bad. I was all over the place. I couldn’t get the curveball overt. Just throwing fastballs over the plate"

David O'Brien ‏@ajcbraves 1h
#Braves Kimbrel: “I apologized to him. I mean, that’s disrespectful to him and to the team, and it’s just not the kind of person that I am."

I think Avilan will be ok but agree with KL.

Walden should be set-up.

But, i'd give Ian Thomas a bigger role in the pen.

I figured Carp would regress a bit but not like this...

Braves lead the Majors in ERA, but that is due to an amazing start from our starters so far. Braves starters currently own a 1.46 ERA, while our bullpen after tonight has a 5.13 ERA to rank 23rd in the Majors (among the worst in MLB so far).

Now that CK apologized to Fredi for getting pissed at him doing the right thing, I think it's time for some of you to apologize to Fredi. :Alone:

The Nationals do have a much improved bullpen so far (at least when facing anyone but the Braves). But their starters have struggled to a 4.66 ERA thus far.

Carpenter was basically the 6th inning guy at the start of the season. Then EOF went down, was moved up to the 7th with Avilan. Walden got hurt after the all-star break, Carp moved up to 8th and Avilan was the situational guy in the 7th or 8th depending on the lefty match ups. Now Walden is the 7th inning guy, Carp 8th but it needs to be reversed.

And yes Thomas has earned a shot at a bigger role in the situational innings at the end of the game.

I know what you're saying, but it's not about desire. It's about self control and self control is an integral part of performance. I get pissed off a lot too, but know not to go into a cussing fit every time things don't go my way. It doesn't change a thing and you look childish.

Kimbrel knew he was done as soon as Fredi came out of the dugout and raised his right hand. His argument was over at that point. If he just had to protest at least he could've had the courtesy to cover his mouth with his glove.

Glad it's over. We're 12-5 and the Nats lost.

Runnin, I don't think you have reached your seventh decade yet (that's turning 60 for those of you who are math impaired), but the game and behavior of athletes has changed so much during my years as a participant and spectator. The cool and collected professional is now viewed as diffident while the guy who acts like his hair is on fire is viewed as having more desire. I'm fine with either as long as the behavior doesn't disrespect the game, but it is a change I have observed. The guys we used to call "hot dogs" are now described as having "style" or "desire."

He may prove me wrong, but I think Carpenter is proof of the old adage that "anyone can have a month." He was unhittable late in 2013, but his control was never much to write home about. He just got into this groove last season where it all came together for him. Maybe he gets it back.

I'll say this for Justin Upton: that man does not strut in vain. When he breaks out the home run strut, that ball is going over the fence. I don't think I've ever seen it burn him, even on the wall scrapers.

didn't think anybody was hitting one out of that park last night, esp after Duda's blast.

yeah maybe Thomas can be this year's Carpenter. Somebody needs to be, and it not looking like Carpenter is going to be this year's Carpenter.

I remember when people thought Chad Paronto was good and better than Tyler Yates.

People compared Paronto to Gryboski and he was nowhere close. Yates had a good year for us in 2007 before Bobby overused him.

Carpenter scares me. His mechanics suck and he has not so good control. If he didn't throw 95 he wouldn't be too effective.

I still am not overly worried about our BP. I don't know if it's because of how early it is or maybe I'm being naive, but I trust CK, Avilan, Walden and Thomas a good amount. I like Carp's stuff, so I personally am alright with him. Varvaro and Schlosser are the two I don't trust. I wouldn't be against a move to look for another arm at all. I think Hale comes to the BP when he's back and I love that move. Varvaro just scares me, a lot.

I think it's going to be a continuing work in progress. Provided Kimbrel is healthy, you can build backwards from the ninth inning. Walden has looked better early than he did late last year. I'm hoping Avilan gets it back together. The rest is a big bunch of undecided for me. They can all play roles, but I don't now how much I want to see the remainder in high leverage situations. I think we will see J.R. Graham and maybe John Cornely in the bullpen at some point this season.

The pen will sort itself out. As several posters have noted, Thomas should be given more high leverage innings and Carpenter fewer. Beyond that we'll also soon have Hale in the pen, presumably with Schlosser going to AAA. We also have several guys pitching well in AAA who could be called up if Varvaro continues to struggle or someone gets hurt. And Venters should enter into the equation sometime around the All-Star break.

The pen will get better and become one of the games best. Im actually glad its happening early on this season, struggles that is. Got plenty of time to correct the issues.

The pen will improve and our starters will get worse. It will all even out in the end. Teheran, Santana, Minor, Harang, and Wood will be a very good rotation tho.
