2019 MLB Draft Thread

The BA and FG lists are useful up to a point. Should not be treated as the bible.

I would assume it breaks down tremendously after you exit the universe of well known players.

Those pubs have good reporting but the idea that some guy that was a volunteer blogged for taking chip is now a talent expert is silly.

BA usually vastly overrates the triangle area prospects / acc because they see them a lot.

I never said they should be. But that’s not the profile of player that a team should be going overslot on.

HS player with a scholarship. Or college player with more than one year of eligibility left. Once you get past the big bonus rounds, those types of players usually require bonuses above slot.

Harris maybe, but while the others have some leverage, given their relatively low profile, I have to believe they are already signed at no more than slot and perhaps under.

Bryse Wilson is an example of who I have in mind. Not a high profile player coming out of high school. Taken in round 4. Required a bonus over 1M to entice him away from a scholarship.

A player who many other teams haven’t heard of and may or may not have a scholarship to Elon should have zero leverage with a top-five round pick.

But Wilson was on a lot of people's radar. I think he was a Top 100 guy a few places.

Maybe a guy like Paolini is a tough sign because he believes going to Elon will raise his draft profile. If the Braves were only one of a handful of teams in on him, he may think, "Everyone will be in on me now." Tough call for the player.

I guess my point is that with a guy like Paolini, the Braves have probably gauged his bonus needs before drafting him and wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't believe he would sign at a reasonable price. I think the same thinking was in place for Bryse Wilson.

Named “Darius Vines” and a JUCO transfer from Yavapai CC, very near my old wine-stomping grounds. So this pick’s near&dear.

Well. If he and his family value the college education and experience. And the Braves value him more than the lists from BA and FG would suggest, I could see Paolini getting a bit more than his $333K slot.

Wilson slipped to the 4th round. Maybe other teams didn't see what the Braves did. The Braves did meet several times with Bryse and his parents before drafting him. They knew what his price was before taking him. Apparently, they were the only team to do this.

I need to get back up to Cottonwood/Prescott and hit the wineries, it's been a while.

Definitely a prospect to keep an eye on for sure.

I think what you are groping for is something like this: Vines picked at moment of optimal ripeness.

Unfortunately he is a pitcher and we can't talk about how he crushes the ball.

I miss northern AZ; haven’t been back since my 2017-18 winter break, when I was down there for about a week. Was in PHX in November for a writers conference, but the valley just isn’t the same as the highlands.
