GDT 7/13/22: Braves vs Mets - Lefties and Defense

It’s gotta be a bad feeling for the position players to know this game is over and it’s only the 3rd…They gotta sleep walk for 6 innings before getting on a plane…They have simply been outplayed this entire series aside from yesterday.

Maybe the length of the deal and dollars on Smith. But consider how much of a train wreck the pen was in 2019 before the deadline moves to get Melancon, Martin, and Greene. Relief pitching is volatile. Minter had not proven he could stick at the MLB level yet, Matzek didn’t really come on until 2020, Jackson was effective but still a little up and down. And Smith had success with the Giants. He took what looked on paper like a good pen and made it deeper, knowing the volatility. Same approach he took this past offseason.

It was the whole deal. Everyone wanted pen help.

As I recall, basically everyone was shocked that we got pen help on a multi year, big money deal with a draft pick. AA had never done a multiyear deal and to break that on a relief pitcher, b/c of the volatility you say, was shocking.

Honestly my main criticisms of AA are:
1. Draft-I still think they lean too much on model and not enough on scouting for early picks
2. Multi year deals

He has really nailed one year deals and trades IMO. Nobody is perfect. You have to predict the future as a GM (hence Enscheff harping on process over results) and predicting the future is the hardest thing to do.

There are not many guys I'd trade for him, if any.

Disappointing series considering we had a chance to really make a statement. But hopefully this will be useful in shining a light that we are a roster that could stand to be upgraded.

Brave pitchers must be used to teams chasing a ton, and with the Mets not doing that at all, struggling
