    Shelby Miller deal revisited

To be fair, I can remember several posters here who insisted the media/Atlanta fanbase response to the trade was overblown and offered the same justification as to why the trade wasn't bad from Arizona's point of view.

    Third-World Problems

Really? In general I think my outlook on the future of the team is rosier than that of most posters in this thread, but I feel like the one thing everyone can agree on is that the Markakis signing has never made any sense. He'd be a fine addition to a winning team with its core already in...

Rosenthal: Fredi will be fired, possibly by end of the road trip

The Braves are currently on pace to go 35-127. Nobody expected this team to be competitive, but "not competitive" is still a long way off from "easily the worst team of all time."

Passan: Braves "desperately" trying to acquire draft picks

Regardless of how you feel about Kemp as a player, San Diego's future outlook is arguably even worse than ours. I doubt they are willing to trade away their draft pick just for salary relief.

    GDT 4/20 vs. LAD

Wait why did Fredi take out Teheran? He'd thrown 75 pitches and wasn't even getting hit?

What is Inciarte worth? And is he worth keeping?

Yeah, to put a Sonny Gray trade in context, I saw his name mentioned frequently when writers were discussing the kind of SP that Arizona should have been able to get for what they gave us in the Miller deal. I think a lot of baseball people felt Inciarte + Blair would've been fair value for...

Heyward to Cubs for less than $200M

That is a very disingenuous comparison of the two. Their minor league stats: Soler: .303/.381/.542, 17.1% strikeout rate, 10.8% walk rate Alvarez: .278/.372/516, 24.6% strikeout rate, 12.9% walk rate You can't just handwave a 7.5% difference in strikeout rate as "Soler struck out a bit less."...

Heyward to Cubs for less than $200M

Really, he's a 26 year old A- player who got paid A- money. In a world where a Cano gets 10/240 at age 32, Greinke gets 6/206 at 32, Stanton gets 12/325 at 25, etc. I don't know why people keep thinking this is some kind of massive overpay. This is what good, young players cost now. This...

Heyward to Cubs for less than $200M

Yeah, baseball salaries have grown so quickly over the past 15 years that it's pretty misleading to compare pay rates on contracts that are even a couple of years apart. But really, anyone who thinks the Cubs overpaid for Heyward because the value of his defense is overstated - what do you...

Bowman: Braves trying to trade Swisher

I don't know, I thought it made perfect sense if their plan really was to be competitive in 2017; it was just a very NBA-esque sort of move. Granted, we're not having to work with a hard salary cap like in the NBA, but if you have budget constraints and you have no plans to compete for a year...

Post Your Original Join Date Here

My Scout profile says December 2004, which seems about right. If I recall correctly I first started poking around the internet for baseball news around the time of the Hudson trade, which led me to the Scout board.

    C. Bethancourt to SD for RHP Kelly, and '14 International Signee R. Rodriguez (C)

I feel like a large part of his downfall has just been a major shift in how catchers are valued over the last few years. His best feature has always been his arm, but over the last several years teams have started to realize pitch calling and framing are far more important, and he's not...

    An Interesting Thought About...

Neither Upton nor Gordon is coming off a season anywhere near as good as Cespedes' 2015. On top of that Gordon is nearly 2 years older than Cespedes, and Upton is awful defensively. Neither of them can play CF either. Once Heyward signs, Cespedes will be the biggest impact OF available in a...

    An Interesting Thought About...

I like Cespedes, but I will be shocked if he signs for fewer than 5 years or less than $23 million annually, which definitely puts us out of contention for him.

    2015 WINTER MEETINGS THREAD

I agree. He's signed through 2020 for less money than JA Happ got this offseason. We can absolutely afford to wait and see if he gets back to his old self; even if he only improves to being a 2-WAR pitcher he'd still be a bargain.

Shelby to AZ for E. Inciarte, A. Blair, and Dansby Swanson

Nah, the general consensus is that this was a horrible trade for them. It's not about them wanting to win now, it's about opportunity cost. For what they paid, they likely could have gotten a pitcher in the Carrasco/Harvey/Grey tier if they had bothered to talk to anyone but the Braves. On top...

    2016 Payroll

Is the implication here that Heyward doesn't do his job every day because he's too concerned with money? Do you have any other insights into his psyche? Maybe he also doesn't love baseball as much as he should. I'm not really sure what you're even trying to argue anymore. Of course Lou...

    2016 Payroll

His defensive numbers are being held down by the brewers playing him in cf most often. His numbers in rf have been consistently good. That said, his offensive numbers this year do look like a fluke, and they'll likely drive his FA price up too far to be worth it.
