2018 Offseason And Targets

What about Khris Davis from Oakland? I know he was primarily a DH this past season but certainly would solve the power hitter behind Freeman problem the Braves have. Entering the final year of his contract, Oakland may be looking to cash in before he hits free agency.

the team just win 96 games. Are you kidding me?

Found this kinda interesting:

Dave O’Brien, of The Athletic, joined Dukes and Bell on Tuesday and talked about how the Atlanta Braves might approach the offseason now that the 2018 campaign has ended.

When asked about the possibility of getting a player like Byrce Harper...

“If you wanted a Bryce Harper you could do it, it’s just if you want to go spend that money, because you have the money to do it," said O'Brien. "You don’t have any huge salaries except Freddie’s. They could make him an offer, because I don’t know if he gets $35 million a year.”

O’Brien continued on the possibility of Harper joining the Braves.

“Just know this... Freddie Freeman has become good friends with Bryce Harper, and he’s been campaigning for him to come here and join the Braves," said O'Brien. "And I could see him fitting in here.”

A couple of thoughts on the whole Harper/Machado thing:

1. If a team gives either the estimated $400 million, they will regret it longer than they like it.

2. If a team gives either the estimated $400 million, it makes a mockery of the decision to break up the Braves' TBS deal for competitive reasons. A league trying to be competitive doesn't have a player on one team making half of another team's entire payroll.

I know it’s incredibly unlikely we outbid the other teams for Harper. I don’t think it will happen and I don’t know how we could possibly fill other needs while doing it. But man I would love it.

I never said a team signing Harper or Machado couldn't move other players to make that happen - Turner or Puig or Pedersen leaving LA for Harper or Machado for instance. Of course they could. I said that I think they would look differently now as opposed to the past as to whether they should at a premium cost.

They don't need the star power. They've got that. It really boils down for them (LAD, NYY, BoSox, Cubs), more so than virtually any other teams, on the value of the player on the field. The money and years and types of contracts (multiple opt outs) being thrown around only makes sense, if it can be made to make sense at all, if there is a significant amount of off field value that a team could recognize in brand value. That's why I don't think they get the numbers thrown around.

Will they beat the current record of Stanton? Almost certainly. Will they blow Stanton's deal out of the water? I don't think so.

Well, it's good to know some things never change.

Here's to another off season of nonstop speculating on players that have 0% chance of coming to Atlanta. Cheers!

At least this offseason we are likely to get some good players, even if they aren’t the top FA’s.

Unlike the Braves, the Dodgers have young catchers who could step in to share time with Hedges. They may be smart enough not to give Grandal $80M. If they sign Harper then Puig is suddenly an option.

Kimbrel makes zero sense for the Braves and isn't even worth discussing as a possibility.

Do you mean Barnes??

I doubt it happens but its the offseason lol, and who knows what Harper's market is gonna be.

Maybe the dodgers would move Turner. That would make the most sense if they signed Machado.

Turner's one of their best hitters, and a clubhouse guy, i could see him move back to 2B if they kept Machado and convinced him to play 3B.

But no chance they trade him. I could see them trade an outfielder with the log jam they have with Puig, Verdugo, Taylor, and Joc as well as Bellinger in there.

Seager to 2nd

Not a chance, you waste his defensive abilities there. I dont think they re-sign Machado, and roll with Muncy, Kike/Taylor, Seager, Turner as their infield next year. Wonder if LA gets involved with the Harper market.

I really like the idea of Pollock, but he's played a full season 1 time in the last 6 years. Below are his games played. AA would have to account for this and prorate what he's comfortable paying him based off his projeted games played per year.
