2022 Trade Deadline

Nationals better trade Soto this deadline. Now that Will Smith is out of the division, Soto’s trade value will go down.

Baez and pretty much everybody with Detroit has been trash this year. Maybe AA sees something they can fix with Grossman. We all thought Soler was toast when he got here last year.

Underlying metrics looked good for Soler, which was mentioned at the time.

Underlying metrics are much less rosy for Grossman, overall; however, he's remained quite productive as a RH, and thus should be useful as a short-side platoon piece in LF. Given the negligible cost, it looks like a solid play. But I still think the Braves need another hitter, and preferably one who can play both 2B and LF.

I’ll make a few predictions:

Juan Soto to the Cardinals
Noah Syndergaard to the Jays
Willson Contreras to the Padres
Alex does something that makes us say “didn’t see that coming”

So are we safe to assume that Grossman is here to slap hit vs LH pitching? Now I think Taylor makes sense if this going to solve our LF issue…

I’m just glad we got Jansen in the offseason so we could afford to cut bait with Smith. I wish Matzek was his old self so I expect to see a lefty bullpen piece gotten before the deadline.

I think folks are underselling Heredia’s usefulness as a platoon partner for Harris.

Upgrading Heredia’s roster spot is the lowest hanging fruit to provide insurance if Harris is injured. Heredia is the only capable CF on the roster (Acuna won’t do it per AA). I suspect the Braves are still in the market for someone like Michael A. Taylor or Laureano (and probably out on Happ or Drury).

Cubs will probably screw up and end up keeping Happ and Contreras thur the deadline. AA probably wasn’t comfortable with the price.

Why?

Yates will be promoted today.

FWIW - for those bemoaning the money owed to the two "*hitty" players Alex traded for, just stop.

The Astros are sending $3,214,286 along with Odorizzi, and the Tigers are sending $3,214,282 along with Grossman.

The Braves aren't the only team that "buys" prospects or buys down contracts to get rid of veterans during a rebuild to fill a need elsewhere (the Astros had NO LHPs in their pen, so even Smith is an upgrade). Alex got $3.2 million to replace Smith with Yates AND add veteran rotation depth at the same time, and got $3.2 million for a platoon partner for Rosario for a Pitcher who wasn't very likely going to ever see the major leagues AND opened up innings for the HS arms that they just drafted to gobble up.

Strider is 14 innings shy of his career-high in IP, so he likely becomes the high-leverage RH pen arm we wanted in the not-too-distant future with Odorizzi taking his rotation spot. If Anderson continues to struggle, you have Muller, Tarnok, Shuster, and potentially Soroka behind him to step in. There's really no need for Alex to give up anything else - you now essentially have Odorizzi, Anderson, Muller, Tarnok, Shuster, and Soroka competing to make two or three Game 4 starts in the postseason - with the potential that they could also choose to make those bullpen games with Chavez as the Opener followed by Strider and one of them for a couple innings or once through the opposing lineup.

What sucks is the Mets are probably going to be able to snag some serious pieces for cheap since they've waited out the market and probably among the last suitors of players like Contreras and even JD Martinez.

They’ll probably pony up for Contreras and Robertson. Might even grab Drury.

I like Grossman as a bench bat you can bring in against a tough lefty but he should in no way prevent us from adding an impact bat if we have that option.

Considering the money the Tigers sent with him, I definitely think it's not outside the realm of possibility that Alex circles back on someone like Drury or even an extra RH pen arm late this afternoon if other contenders make deals for bigger names and the asking prices for those guys come down if their markets start to dry up.

There's just no need to give up even SLIGHTLY valuable pieces for them at this point - he filled the holes yesterday, and Ozzie will be back in 3-4 weeks.

I will admit I'm a little surprised he didn't offer another "expendable arm" to expand the Grossman deal to include Fulmer to begin with - makes it seem likely the Tigers thought they could get more for him, and that could easily change by 3-4 PM.
