Braves trade CJ for Swisher, Bourn, $$$

Cj is toxic so glad he's gone.

If we aren't signing anyone this off season that is disappointing. I don't think we can go padres in 2017. Need to build. Need to solve starting pitcher catcher or corner of this offseason IMO.

I would think we would loom to extend miller since he's a hart guy.

Bourne is a really expensive pinch runner. Like bj really and making bj money.

2 guys taking up room on the 40 man. I think we release swisher and let Bourne play out the last yr.

Hmm, that is true, 10 mill would lead to a loss for the Braves, but on Twitter they are saying the money is offset... so, we will see.

The Money is basically offset starting next year. Bourn and Swisher are owed $9 Mil and Johnson is owed $2 Mil this season. That's 7 of the 9 Mil loss. It fits in the payroll from this year, but it is for sure a loss over the 3 year period.

Johnson's 2017 includes his $1 Mil buyout for 2018.

Also while there is a >5% chance of Swisher's option vesting and a 30% chance of Bourn's option vesting, that danger does exist and should be valued in.

I wasn't making anything out of it. Certainly not a mountain. My comment was mostly about the acquisition of Bourn making Maybin expendable.

Maybin is not expendable

Bourne is bj esque.

The Maybin decision should be based on what we can get for him and if they think mallex is the long term answer. If mallex is the long term answer (I don't think so) then you play him next year so he's ready for 17 . Maybe start Bourne to hold down mallexs free agent time and maybe he plays well enough someone will take him for a couple million relief.

Not really. They know the number. They just cut them if they get close. Even if Bourne has a bounce back season and magics or Peds his way to 3 war we are not going to want him in 17

Maybin is absolutely expendable. That doesn't mean Hart should give him away.

This year the money doesn't really matter though; The Braves obviously felt that it was worth taking on money this year (when it doesn't matter) to free up 10 Mill more for 2017 (due to not having Swisher, Bourn (likely not) or Johnson on the books) for moving into the new stadium.

just cut them after this season then

problem solved

The money does matter.

We aren't in a salary cap sport. We could not do this trade. Purchase an annuity with the salary difference and be better off 2017. The only way this works out for us is if we get SOMETHING from Bourn next year.

Maybin has crashed hard and is pretty close to ending the season with very little value.

Agreed. That would solve the problem. We could have also just cut Johnson too and not taken on extra salary. So they must think Bourn next season is worth something.

I think that's the plan. This is not just about unloading Johnson. The team wanted Bourn.

I included the $10 Mil in the this chart. If you include the remainder of this year's money, the Braves will lose about $9 Million.

I think we are using some of the savings on the Arrojo money to pay the extra 2015 salaries.

what does the 2016 payroll look now. Does that 10 Million the Indians gave back go towards the 2016 payroll?

Clearly the added money for 2015 doesn't matter. They aren't making more moves that matter on the 2015 salary and the management and owners clearly have the space to take on the added 2015 money, else the trade couldn't have happened. The added money makes 2016 a push money wise. The trade saves the Braves $10 million in 2017. Money does matter; this was done in a way to free up the money for when the Braves feel they will best be able to spend it (i.e. Hart already confirmed they weren't after the big 2016 FAs because they were out of the team's price range.

Hart dropped the ball not selling high on Maybin. Bourn and Swisher are awful. If Hart does not release them immediately, then I am concerned.
