Braves get Murphy 3 way deal

I still DO NOT understand why AA made this deal smh. I'm still sitting here with my mouth wide open. 5 players given up for 1 guy and the Brewers robbing both teams.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Sean will be the best Murphy in Braves history. I doubt we’ll even be able to think of a close second.

Sean Newcomb Murphy? Never heard of him.
Newcomb sacrificed himself so that we could get Murphy. The second best Murphy ever to wear a Braves uniform. But that sacrificed the great Bill Contreras, the second best Bill in Braves lore next to Bill Shan.....Um..Nevermind. Enough.

Why would you have to do that?

Signing him to an extension that includes the 2023 season would significantly raise the tax hit for 2023. Right now it's an estimated 3.5 million hit. Wouldn't necessarily matter if they end up going over it anyways but I seriously doubt they will.

Doubt they sign him to an extension or go over the tax?

Classy.

We basically have no choice but to go over this year at least lol.

It feels surreal that the Braves are even close to a luxury tax. About time for MLB to come down with some arbitrary rule taking away all draft picks from teams over the luxury tax that have won a world series starting from 2021 onwards just to **** us.

This seems like a really good deal for us. The risk is not even that huge in this market. It is like Ozuna signing level risk.

$4M salary in 2023, but a $12.5M luxury tax hit. The Braves are now going to be paying the luxury tax, and are probably the only team in MLB history paying tax on salaries they aren’t actually paying that season. A very interesting way to chase “value”.

Murphy would have been a FA going into his age 31 season. Barring a significant injury he would have easily beaten the 3/45 guarantee the Braves just gave him for his early FA seasons.

The risk is that he falls off a cliff as a catcher once he hits his 30s, and the Braves are left with an expensive backup. Catchers have the worst aging curve of all position players, so the chances of that happening aren’t as far fetched as some other extensions AA has signed.

I’m not familiar with how the luxury tax works, but why is his 4 million salary being counted as a 12.5 million luxury hit? Since we’re over now, do you think we spend more? Maybe jump into the Correa sweepstakes? Doubtful I know but why go over the luxury tax now?

The guarantee is 6/73, and luxury tax uses the AAV. I misread the contract as 7/83 guaranteed, but the actual AAV is a little over $12.2M.

I believe it's the AAV that counts toward the tax. From what I've read they're projected to be at 238 and could go up to 253 before going into the next luxury tier. So that could be another $15M to play with.
