Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

I just can't believe how ridiculous baseball is right now. Dodgers can basically spend as much money as they want with no real repercussions. I swear I'm losing so much interest in this game now.

Dodgers have been on this spending spree for a while... and they haven't won a single pennant yet

Dodgers have been smart and have been spending it on young players. They had issues with Hanley at hte wrong time and Kershaw inexplicably sucked in the playoffs. They have basically assured themselves a playoff spot for the next 10 years with their money.

I'm disappointed we didn't get him, but no way would I be comfortable with that $ and those years. I was uncomfortable at anything beyond 4 / $40m.

I'm reminded of the ... "would make sense that this was our plan all along" posts.

Not really, but what DOES make sense is that we weren't going close to there.

Pretty obvious that the reports that teams were getting "turned off" by the bonus demands were true - IF the Braves were going to play at that kind of level, they'd have played on Moncada, NOT Olivera.

We absolutely couldn't make another $50 million mistake before the new park opens.

I raise a glass to the idiocy that is modern day MLB.

And (sour grapes) here's to hoping that Olivera is a colossal flop and that contract becomes enough to disembowel even the free spending Dodger$.

Well I'm still waiting to understand how we plan to bring in any impact hitters if we're unwilling to spend. We weren't willing to spend on Heyward or Upton. So then I've been told we're gonna do it via Cuban players... well we weren't willing to spend on them either (right or wrong)... so how do we get a hitter in Atlanta that is better than Jonny Gomes and Callaspo?

Dodger could not spend enough money to come close to matching their profits. Baseball is a joke right now with the inequity of the big markets in comparison to the rest of baseball.

At this point the idea is that internal development and progression will get us there. I do not think we need a big bopper to win. Give me guys like Peterson/Peraza/hopefully Albies/Ruiz/etc...

All ANY fan here said was we hope we get certain players.
Somehow that turns into people claiming the FO's plan was to sign Cubans, or that posters here guaranteed that's what we were doing.

I'm not surprised he's a Dodger. Just buy everyone.

Braves will spend, they just won't pay market value.

So if you want to take a team friendly deal for security (FF, Simba, etc), then the Braves will spend. But I don't see us paying market value. And lately we've stunk on all FA buys so I don't hate it.

I just wish we had some more hitters in the pipeline and I had some confidence we could produce hitters. I know we had FF and Heyward, but Heyward never came close to his ceiling....so it almost seems like FF is a fluke. I guess we had Prado too, and he was close to his potential and valuable.

And no, we are not in position to give a total unknown, 29-year old who has never played in the MLB 6 years for 62.5 mil. We should not go there. The Dodgers just throw out money. Each dollar means more to us. So I'm not mad we didn't pony up $62.5.

No, they have not.
